The US may voluntarily relinquish its status as a world power and Europeans must brace themselves for such a contingency, including by boosting their militaries, the German chancellor has warned.
European nations need “to carry more of the burden than during the cold war” in terms of defense spending, Merkel said, because they cannot assume that the US will be there to protect them.
“We grew up in the certain knowledge that the United States wanted to be a world power. Should the US now wish to withdraw from that role of its own free will, we would have to reflect on that very deeply,” she said, in an interview published in six European newspapers.

The German leader stopped short of advocating a joint EU military force, the idea favored by French President Emmanuel Macron. She said she saw the value of NATO capabilities, including the shared nuclear umbrella, in a world of the rising Asian powers China and India.
The French leader has a much more skeptical attitude towards the transatlantic defense bloc. Last year he said NATO was “brain dead.”
Merkel lamented the increasing selfishness of nations today, which, she said, contrasts with the unified multilateral response to the 2008 financial crisis. “These days, we have to do all we can to stop ourselves collapsing into protectionism,” she said.
“If Europe wants to be heard, then it needs to set a good example.”
Protectionist approaches are at the core of the Trump administration’s foreign policy. Under Trump, Washington pushed for the renegotiation of trade deals that the US president saw as unfavorable to his country. He also dialed up to 11 the criticism of European NATO members like Germany, which fail to meet their military spending obligations, calling them freeloaders. And his administration has made confrontation with China on all fronts a priority, ramping up the pressure on third nations to scare them away from cooperating with Beijing.
Speaking about China, Merkel said its rise “shows that even an undemocratic state can be economically successful, which is a major challenge for our liberal democracies.” This example and other post-cold war developments, from the emergence of the Islamist terrorist threat to the disappointing results of the Arab Spring, are a matter of grave concern for believers in liberal causes like herself.
“We have not yet been able to furnish absolute proof that the liberal system is about to win the day.”
But Merkel seems reluctant to join the US and go for a major confrontation with China, saying Beijing’s new-found power is a reality that other nations have to learn to live with.
“China has become a global player. That makes us partners in economic cooperation and combating climate change, but also competitors with very different political systems,” she said.
“Not to talk to each other would certainly be a bad idea.”
The same is true for Russia, the country that the US sees as its other strategic rival. Berlin needs to remain engaged with Moscow despite all issues in their bilateral relations.
“In countries like Syria and Libya, countries in Europe’s immediate neighbourhood, Russia’s strategic influence is great,” Merkel explained.
“I will therefore continue to strive for cooperation.”

If she met her NATO GPD spending requirements she wouldn’t be worrying about not having a functioning military.
Its hard to justify 2% of GDP if you dont have enemies around.
The much bigger problem is also the leftest ideology that gets the best to leave the troop.

Germany showed up to NATO join exercises in 2015 with broom sticks painted black because they didn't have enough machine guns to go around.
Thats not true, they were not allowed to get the machine guns from Storage. MG3s are not missing, they are just in giant vaults and not with the soldiers. same goes for every other small arm. the MG3 is the worst. they use alot of very old ones while they have thousands of brand new ones in storage, some of those storages have brand new 50 year old guns in them...

5 yuan have been deposited into your Bank of China account. Seriously, if you aren't getting paid for this shit you are a moron.

I'm not pro-china. I'm not pro-EU and I'm not pro-America. As it stands there is no political body or state that adequately represents my beliefs

I find it depressing to concede to actually; my ethnic background hates the Han with a passion. We hate Communists, and we hate liberalism. And yet despite that, I dislike Trump-ism fake-rightwingism even more.

I'm not left wing by any stretch of the imagination. And it depresses me that the best potential ally of the European continent at the moment is communist China.

That said unless Trump fails to secure his next term they are and I. and clearly the EU leadership, see no reason to make enemies of the PRC until it's established if the current American stance can be ascribed to being a temporary blip or a long term change.

Well Russia is also there and Israel.

China isn't anybody's ally. China is asshoe. Their only interest in the Euros is stealing their IP, putting spyware in their networks, and conning them into closing down their remaining factories and sending them to China. Thinking the Chinese are your friend is a good way to wake up in an ice bath with your kidneys missing.

Well Russia is also there and Israel.

Russia isn't and would take some radical changes to become a friend of Europe. Israel is a member of the EU currently in all but name since they're members of all the key economic zones already.

Were it not for the threat of war with the middle east, they would be members of the EU formally long before now. Israel has already petitioned to be admitted as a member long before now.

I totally agree. But doesn't that indicate how bad relationships are with the US, and how unreliable an ally the EU now considers the US to be that China looks like a better prospect?

As for everyone winging about social vs militaristic spending, I can't wait to see what you think when the EU agrees to start hosting Chinese missile bases in Europe and European oversees territories; which depending on the next few years is a very real reality.

No, it indicates the EU are delusional faggots who've been huffing their own farts for so long their brains are now 97% jenkem. Forget this shit about the US not being a world power, France and Germany won't even be first world countries anymore in a generation.

Russia is already a friend, they keep us warm and kill Terrorists all over the world for us, unlike the US.

Greece is pissed for very good reasons. i cant blame them for hosting Chinese or north Korean missiles after what the Nato did to them.

I dont get the idea that we should spend more money. Money isnt the Issue, Germany could have the best army in the world with the money we spend.
They kick out the good people every couple of years because they arent left wing enough.
The Fixation on Material is a very American thing, the US always used poorly trained and lead troops with alot of material, just like the Russians.

What? Have you even seen the training budget for the US military? We spend more money on ammo in a month for training our Nasty Girls than most nations spend in a year on their entire defense force. Yes, the upper brass and flag ranks turn into politically back stabbing retards to further their careers but a huge focus in the military is making leaders, not brain dead followers.

No, that's bullshit. The US Army is better, and more expensively trained than most Euro armies (Germany doesn't really have an army tbf, they don't even have enough troops to fill an NFL stadium). The US Army (and the Marine Corps, which just by itself is bigger than the German and French armies combined, lol) also has a lot more experience of fighting wars than any Euro army - only the Brits come close.

"Fixating on materiel" isn't a US or Russian thing, it's literally what you need to win wars. Running at the bad guys with nothing but your dick in your hand tends to be a suboptimal tactic. But I guess Germany still hasn't learned from getting its ass kicked the last couple times, brother. :hulk:

China has all green troops. None of them are combat veterans unless you count murdering minorities in China or Hong Kong. You are fucking delusional if you think that and material / training doesn't matter or that the US has some kind of training deficiency.
