Pretty much this, although I'd say it's less of a left-wing thing and more of a two-party system that goes back to the early days of this country.

The United States has always had a two-party system going all the way back to the Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans in the late 1700's and early 1800's. The last time a major party collapsed altogether and a new one filled its slot was when the Whigs collapsed just before the outbreak of the American Civil War and the Republican Party took its place.

The Democrats and GOP have both gone through multiple platform shifts and party realignments throughout history, the most recent one is the establishment of the Sixth Party System in the 1970's, which is the current party system we're in.

Really, the only hope is to infiltrate the party system and pray you can set the stage for a Seventh Party System. Trump is more or less trying to do just that right now, and previous "meme candidates" like Ron Paul, Dennis Kuchinich, and to a lesser extent, Bernie Sanders, have all tried to do it before.

A Trump win in 2020 might be one of those domino effect moments that really does bring on a potential Seventh Party System, depending on if he wins, and if so, by how wide of a margin, and how the 2022 midterms finally play out for the two parties.

I can confirm the heavy-handedness. I once worked at a client site where Pinkerton did security. One day, they could be largely indifferent only to be enforcing lockdown-style security protocols the next day with checkpoints for inspecting everyone's brief cases to make sure what was inside matched what was declared on the back of their ID badges.


I don't know if the idea took off in other cities, but the Detroit PD once had a number of musically-talented cops form a band and call themselves the Blue Pigs. They'd use their musical performances as a form of community relations. So, they took what was traditionally seen as a disparaging nickname and turned it into a term of pride. The fact that he outright said Chauvin was wrong and should be fired is a huge shift from anything he’s said in the past related to police brutality cases. And it still isn’t enough for the mob.
