Already tired of her luxury villa. Where is she off to next?
At the rate she's going, either an urn in her mother's closet, or a long-term care facility.
They signed a year lease, right? Does she means she doesn't intend to decorate or personalize that apartment at all because she might not renew the lease months from now?
I'm certain she realized what a mistake that apartment--or at least all of its stairs--was within the first 48 hours of moving in, to the point where she's already given up on making it "home." But even if she was okay with the apartment and intended to stay, I don't think she'd decorate; she really doesn't seem to care at all about it. I mean, holy shit, just look at the hideous turd of a couch she and James picked out; if she cared at all about decorating, she would have insisted on something attractive.
I think she decorated a bit while living with Malan because at the time he was actually her boyfriend, and being part of a couple also meant living in a nice-looking place. It wasn't that she really cared about the appearance of her home; decorating is just what you do. But living with James is different; they're not a real couple, building a life together, so why bother? And who knows? Maybe Malan was the one responsible for some of the decor at her old place.
Her life is so grim . She's going to spend nine more months in a very basic, though nice-enough apartment - blank walls, no furniture, no area rugs, no personal items that she cherishes on display - because she may move out next April. Kids at summer camp bring items to personalize their bunk. College students decorate shoe box dorm rooms each semester. But Chantal can't be arsed to decorate, adorn, or even furnish properly her apartment because it's temporary.
To be fair, not everybody gives a shit about decorating, and it's not a personal failing if you don't.
I'd rather see somebody content to live with blank walls and landlord carpet than a consoomer who spends a lot of money on tasteless decor items that mean nothing to them because they think they have to. And if you know a place is temporary, and you're just going to have to pack up and move all that shit in a year or less, a lot of adults would rather not bother--each thing you add is just another trip up and down those fucking stairs.
Chantal's life is indeed grim, but it's not because she isn't interested in decorating an apartment she wishes she hadn't moved into, and hopes to leave.
She probably is too exhausted coping with what she has done to herself to really be able to decorate anyway, but it's still fucking grim.
She hung two crappy little identical pictures on the wall opposite the kitchen when she first moved in, before calling it quits, and it probably took her a lot of effort just to do that. She can barely move without gasping for breath, and can't walk or stand for more than a handful of minutes without needing to sit. So hanging bigger pictures, or, god forbid, a mirror? It's not going to happen. And I doubt James would be all that willing to help; he cares about decorating even less than Chantal does. He can't even be bothered by the piles of cardboard enough to haul them out.
