I'll start by saying I'm a bit MOTI this morning. I don't give a shit if she chooses to live in increasing squalor, if she wants to eat herself to death or act like a dispectful cow to Peetz, family or friends. How they handle that is their choice. What frosts my fritters is her contempt for a health care system that she'd be totally screwed without.
Health care under any payment system isn't cheap & Ontario's health care system consumes a huge part of the province's annual budget. Governments inevitably cut front line staff instead of fat administrative jobs when they're trying to 'save money'. This has led to, pre-CoVD, increasing wait times for... everything. Hospitals in many areas have spent the last 2 or more years running at well over 100% capacity... hallway medicine? In some cases, store rooms have been turned into 'patient care spaces' & it's ugly.
Hospitals struggled to clear space when the pandemic started, anticipating we might see many more severely ill cases. They did that by postponing a ton of 'elective' procedures & tests, including cancer surgeries & sadly, health stats are starting to reflect that with the number of 'excess deaths' NOT directly due to CoVD climbing.
Visiting nurse service is covered by provincial health care, no matter if you need a health care aid, RNA or RN. These folks have more work than can be easily handled & routinely deal with impossible daily case loads. And their pay sucks compared to hospital nurses.
They call you the day before or early that day to remind you they're coming & try to give you a time estimate of when they'll be there & they're always late - traffic, a previous appointment that runs late...
So by blowing them off, Chantal is wasting their already limited time. If they knew she'd not be there, they could skip the drive to her place & have precious extra minutes for other patients. Furthermore & especially during the hot, humid summers Ottawa gets, by skipping scheduled wound care, Chantal risks re-infection which might need an in person visit to a doctor or hospital & could lead to being hospitalized.. further burdening an already tightly stretched hospital system.
But hey, God forbid she has to get out of bed earlier than she'd like or do stairs an 'extra' time.
