Then again, they do not need to do so. A lot of police a retiring early.
Monday night's national news reported that nearly 25% of Minneapolis' police are looking to leave the job because of how demoralizing current events there have become. Whether it's early retirement, a job elsewhere, or something entirely different, those officers have made it clear they have no interest in working where they aren't wanted... and who can blame them?
To me "occupied" sounds worse as its a term used when a foreign army takes over land. "Nazi Occupied Europe" "Occupied France" etc.
TBF, the CHAZ/CHOP folks did try to take over city land, albeit unsuccessfully in the most epic of failures. It was hardly autonomous, either, because of their over-reliance on city services and donations/kindness of others for even the most basic of their needs. Their lack of self-sufficiency was painfully obvious.
That said, I think the "Occupied" part of CHOP was partly a nod to the Occupy movement and partly a tryhard attempt at sounding more menacing than they really were.
This tweet is good natured and innocuous, and he's right.
I've said before that alot of these movements in the social media age always start with good intentions, sometimes the best intentions, and then evolve into total shit shows. See #MeToo, see #LGBTQAToZ+, see #Occupy and on and on it goes.
Agreed. many protests or cries of injustice start with an incident that creates legitimate concern or outcry in a good number of people. Unfortunately, the fringe on either side of the issue attract to these movements and turn them into an absolute dumpster fire

-- a reverse Midas Touch of sorts.
The commies are pissed and using it as an excuse to demand things like canceling rent/mortgages, even though most of the encampment residents weren’t living in apartments or houses before the riots
At the recent Detroit protest where the police had to drive their vehicle through the people boxing them in, the protest attracted all sorts of activists groups -- including the usual nuts -- that renewed their demands for items unrelated to police protocols, including:
- The abolishing of ICE,
- The release of illegal aliens currently in detention,
- Free water & sewage service for Detroit's low income residents, and
- The indefinite extension of the executive order preventing residential tenants from being evicted for nonpayment of rent during the COVID-19 emergency.
I can't remember who it was earlier in the thread that asked if these protestors even care about George Floyd at this point, but they may be right because the protests happening now seem more about airing grievances and demanding unrealistic solutions for them and less about the shooting victims and the desire for betterment and real change.
Great. No is going to want a Black neighbor anymore because if you wave hi they will claim you did Heil Hitler or something.
And those that don't wave will be racist for not acknowledging their Black neighbors.
I have literally never heard of Juneteenth in my entire fucking life. I don't know anyone who's heard of it.
Juneteenth, to my knowledge, was celebrated by White hipsters in the cities of Texas (as someone mentioned a bit ago), but literally no one else has heard of it.
Never heard about it in school, k-12 or college and I live in Los Angeles.
I've never heard of it either. Like most anyone else, the Emancipation Proclamation seemed to be the key point being taught in school. Given how difficult cross-country travel was in the 1860s, it's understandable -- if not unfortunate -- that news about the proclamation didn't reach Texas for a couple of years. As such, it's understandable Texas (or a least the relevant city/cities in question) would consider it more significant to them. However, the strong emphasis placed on this year's Juneteenth feels more like people celebrating an event that comes across as a "WTF is this?!" type of thing for most of the country.
Perhaps this is part of the bigger push to promote alternative holidays such as Indigenous Persons Day being recommended as a substitute for Columbus Day -- especially with some people claiming we need to stop observing other holidays they deem too problematic.
Stay safe, Portland Kiwis (or anyone else dealing with riots and crap)
