It's the difference between black and Black now. Ethiopians are black, but they aren't Black; Black is decended from American slave blacks who lost their original culture and can't cope with it. I mean, I lost my original culture too, but I just decided embracing being American is fine.
Maybe they should go with slavekin, since it is everything they root their identities in.
Maybe in America. I've been vaguely aware of some weird sub-culture debate about "black" vs. "Black" recently. I have for years used lower-case for the literal colour and Black for an ethnicity / race because that's good grammar. Just as I use "White" in the same context. Honestly, the way Americans seem unable to distinguish between race and culture drives me batshit. And will continue to do so. Only in the USA are Spanish people not "White".
Honestly, a Black American and a White American typically have more in common with each other than either would with someone of the same skin colour from a foreign country. Western Europe is a little homogenous in terms of culture but Turkish people are White and way more different to White Americans than Black Americans are. Don't even get me started on people calling being against Islam "racism".
One of the big causes of misunderstanding on race between the USA and Europe is that when Europeans say "Black" they mean "Black". When Americans say it they mean "African American". It's fucking maddeningly American-centric to the rest of us.
No offense in any of this, btw. And "slavekin", oh my! You'd be a braver man than I, but you're right. It seems to be a central core of some people's identity.
