I don't play this trash so I don't personally know, but I don't believe this is the case.

They are releasing new 5 star wrestlers who "add viability to your existing team". I'm assuming the old wrestlers stay the same.

If I am guessing correctly, Scopely will make these new wrestlers overpowered and expensive. By making them overpowered, they force you to get the wrestlers in order to get top rankings. By making them expensive, they force you to open your wallet to win.

It probably isn't that expensive. Only a few dozen $20 pulls on the gatcha machine per wrestler times 9 new wrestlers. It's not like having to take out a loan to afford a brand new $60 AAA video game.

other gachas have done it. it's usually a death knell for a game when the makers overtly make all of your previous investments worthless, but given how horrific Scopely's other practices are in this game with regards to their players wallets that they've gotten away with, this will just be another drop in the bucket.

No.

A good portion of the characters are either completely worthless, or were fine to bring up to three star but didn't get enough of a buff at four star to make them worth continuing to build. In addition, the moves of each wrestler are accessible online, and there was a spreadsheet of the new five star moves available before they even debuted in the game. People have known which guys are worth working on for a while now.

I couldn't even imagine someone taking every character in the game to full power. That would be insane/stupid.
