Fiona was hawt back in the day. I had a huge crush on her when I was young. In the past decade or so, Fiona has made it clear that she’s making music for women and doesn’t gaf about men. She’s a 40 year old woman who lives with her female best friend for gods sake. You can agree with that or not but it is what it is. She doesn’t have any social media and doesn’t care about critical reception or engaging in internet politics. Her fanbase has been reduced a bit due to this, but the thing is that she truly doesn’t care. I honestly think it triggers Melon to know that there is a popular female musician out there who is not making music for him and thus his judgments are irrelevant to her.

So Melon takes it personally when her mostly rabid female fanbase tells him that maybe he’s wrong about his interpretation because he doesn’t understand where Fiona is coming from. It’s like getting mad that you don’t relate to rappers as a simp white man. Not everything is for everyone and that’s ok. It is telling that he immediately tries to shut down the fans by accusing them of being terven, which is exactly what TERFs accuse men of doing all the time. I’ve only fairly recently accepted that TERF is a phrase used to shut down women tbh and this incident makes it pretty clear.

Back in the day, I worked at a record store for several years. This fucker encapsulates precisely the type that would come in and hang out in an unending attempt to impress us with their musical knowledge in order to get a job. Of course neglecting to appreciate that it was essentially a retail gig and one has to have affability as well as tolerance because you deal with all manner of people. His type was one of the worst. They'd hit on the female employees because that was likely the extent of any female interaction they had aside from their mother. They'd thumb through the albums for hours sucking on a starbucks coffee confection and never buy anything. They'd come up to the counter with a cd and then change their mind and say they'd probably buy it on itunes, which was a lowkey pussy way of saying the cd was too expensive. He obviously has a fragile ego and I'd be willing to bet he harbors a certain bitterness that he never got hired at his local record shop (while it was still there) but he did very little to actually support it.

He's an aging record shop hipster. A dying breed. This twitter spergery hopefully represents his death throes. Good riddance.

As someone who has been following fantano for a long time, I was expecting this thread to be made (actually a lot sooner than this). His twitter the past year has been insufferable, standard fare smug woke bullshit.

I just hope you guys don't dwell too much on his music opinions unless it's somewhat related to his politics. Music taste is subjective, and I feel like it would be a waste of time and missing the point to criticize him for something like that.

It's not really his taste in music but more that it seems like some of his reviews are made intentionally to pander or to be contrarian. They don't feel the same as the rest, or at the very least when they do they seem completely out of proportion to how you'd expect his reaction to be given the context.

I think there was joke on /mu/ where anons compared Fantano’s RYM music taste to Piero Scaruffi’s, a famous Italian music critic. With Scaruffi, his taste in music is more well detailed and diverse all around, but Fantano’s is more of something you do see as a Reddit starter pack meme on what type of music you need to listen in order to look cool.
