Prison should rehab those it’s able to IF society isn’t harmed by them being released. So a kid who had a shit upbringing, has done some petty crime, and commits to education and bettering themselves deserves a second chance and can probably be rehabilitated if they work for it. Child abusers can’t be rehabilitated. Some people are just unable to operate in society. Some people have committed crimes so heinous that even if they reform, they shouldn’t be let out.

norway is an interesting model but it has a number of differences from other countries. Norway really does have equality of opportunity and so it has far less of the glaring poverty other countries have. It has high education levels, a homogenous population and the money to spend on prisons. There are no sprawling ghettos in Norway. There is no real underclass. And historically the last few decades they’ve not had much crime. Brevik’s sentence caused a lot of consternation because he will be out in 21 years, theres no life in prison in the regular prison service. There’s an increasing sense in the scandi/Nordic countries that the old system is no longer working because of the influx of gangs and foreign criminals.

Back to those who can’t operate in society. When we closed the asylums it was done with good intentions (well that and to save money.) but there is a proportion of society who can not operate safely in the real world and some of them just need very intensive care while others are a danger to others as well as themselves. Prisons are FULL of these people, and prisons are not dealing with them effectively. they will never be ‘ok’ or ‘better.’
I’m not advocating bringing back the old asylum system but we do need to face that some people just need some kind of secure care And pay for it. . Society has tried to accommodate these people in the community and look what’s happened - epic levels of drugs/mentally unstable hobos/random killings. I dont know what the answer is, the old asylum system was brutal but it kept society safer.
A large part of what we are seeing now is the result of decades of naive do gooders who have no idea how the underbelly of society exists and operates. Society needs structure and consequences or it will unravel.
