The argument that photography made realistic painting obsolete is trash. The purpose of realistic art is not to capture perfectly the situation of the moment like a camera does. The purpose was almost always to communicate emotion or ideas. This is something that is more difficult to do with cameras, because you can not control every aspect of a photo like you can with a painting. In a good painting,everything is designed: The lighting, the foreground, the midground, the background, facial expression, color, and so on. Cameras only capture reality, which is not designed.
