Last time I went on a golden triangle weekend of Bass, Cabelas and the local mom and pop shop by me what surprised me to the most that's in abundance is .30-06 it was the only caliber that was in healthy supply and Ruger and Savage make bare bones rifles in said caliber if someone wanted something new that's optics ready.

Man I've been out and about in three states and popped into the local and/or big name stores and the shelves are freaking bare. Hell, they're low on handguns too. Weird times in America.

Trump suspended H-1Bs and other work visas back in June, but he should have done it before this year.
The issue with Trump is if he was to suspend them before the coof "Racist! Evil!" from the media, but yet even in a socalist country you need to control immigration to prevent wages from going down so you still can tax to pay for everything.

I don't know if they're still in production but there's plenty out there. They're light and accurate, nice to hunt with- but have an abysmal mag capacity (4 rounds).

Yeah, .30-06 is a great hunting round and I have to assume it would be pretty formidable for home defense too, maybe over-penetration would be a problem but still. If one insists on optics, the Mosin might not be the best option since properly installing optics requires one to drill and tap the receiver. There are some optics you could probably just remove the rear sight and plant there but I have no idea how well it would work, recoil would probably throw off POA. Original scopes can be had but they're expensive. I think the .30-06 and the 7.62x54R are pretty similar in terms of ballistics, in a SHTF situation I can guarantee .30-06 would be easier to find if you had to scavenge or loot abandoned stores.

I know people laugh at Hi-Point [sometimes for good reason] but I shot one of their carbines in 9mm recently and I gotta say that cheap ugly thing performs decent for a basic, cheap home defense weapon. You can modify it very easily, get longer mags, comes in three different configurations [9mm, .40S&W and .45ACP] and they're cheap as fuck. Might be a decent idea for someone who's short on cash and wants something cheap to practice with before they drop 600+ on a good AR. 9mm and 40S&W don't have much recoil at all fired from a rifle, can't speak for .45ACP but I assume it's got a little kick. If you're curious as to whether Hi-Point earned their shit reputation, look up some torture tests on their weapons, it was surprising as hell to me. Overall they're nothing special, aesthetically displeasing and you might not want to rely on it long as your main defensive tool but for a practice plinker bump in the night gun, you could do worse. You could have one of those little Jimenez saturday night specials.

If you're not big on being able to adjust the sights to half a mile Brass Stacker makes a mount that uses the holes reserved for the rear sight block and if you get creative with your scope rings and have a bent bolt you could effectively put an optic on it that's not long eye relief.

I've fired 9mm handguns and .22 rifles but I've never fired a 5.56x45mm out of an AR-15. How does the recoil compare to 9mm and 0.22?

Next time I get a chance to visit the US hopefully I'll be somewhere where you can go to a shooting range.

The AR15's .223 has 1.5lbs of recoil energy, compared to 20lbs of the 30.06

20lbs doesn't sound like a lot but it's the upper limit of what most people feel comfortable shooting. Beyond that point you can also get a form of motion sickness if the recoil impulse is too high.

For reference, the huge stuff that knocks people down and sends rifles flying like .600 Nitro Express have 150lbs of recoil.
