And then they walked it back later saying nothing was wrong with the dam and there was no deformation AT ALL. I'm thinking the dam is more fucked than they're willing to let on.

I've even been seeing theories that the flood is eating away at the land surrounding the dam. Take a look at this.View attachment 1463615
Why is the water coming out of the sluice gates filthier than the water upstream? Is it sediment going through the sluice and possibly building up in there?
The No Fun take:

Turbulence from the trip through the spillway has all the sediment spread more evenly in the downstream water instead of laying mostly undisturbed on the bottom.

I dunno how much stock I'd put in how brown the water is upstream vs downstream, the agitation of the water by the dam will necessarily stir up and "homogenize" the fine sediments and whatever else is browning the water, whereas upstream it is more placid water which would allow the finer stuff to settle down lower in the water column.

I'd wager sediment buildup could be an issue but I'm not convinced this visual is evidence of it, though I'm not an expert.

edit: beaten by weppers

Looks like one of the flood gates is not working either
Seems like. Contrast with this:

Once again China can't simply just screw themselves over without getting the rest of the world wrapped up in their bullshit, only this time instead of a slightly worse coof they're about to (assuming worst-case scenario comes to pass) irradiate the biggest ocean which will in turn eventually mean radioactive rainstorms across the planet, let alone the potential millions of lives lost and the collapse of global economies and industries.

I can't believe the insanity of this year anymore...

The question I'm wondering is how it will affect the United States, since I live there. This will fuck over our manufacturing badly, especially certain essential goods like pharmaceuticals.

This part is what truly terrifies me, yet I have no clue how to convince my doctor to get my meds stocked up or convince my family to do the same (something I'm terrible at on a good day)...

If China has even a single molecule of wisdom and intelligence left, they'll shut down the reactors ASAP before the rainstorms begin again.

Even with the CCP's infamous hubris, even they know that a major nuclear disaster of any kind will blow their cover and kill any goodwill the regime has left. Especially on the scale it could get in a worst-case scenario where the floods destroy the reactors and wash all that radioactive material into the Pacific Ocean...or at least I hope to God they do.

Even if they shut them down they still have a problem. At this point the dam is no longer doing anything anymore since they have all the floodgates open. Wuhan is 3 days water flow away. Shanghai 7.

Expect major flooding even worse in the days to come

True, but if they shut down the reactors then at least their problem won't massively irradiate the largest body of water in the entire planet for centuries and they can theoretically rebuild once the floodwaters finally dry up.

Chinese dont give a shit about anything outside of their borders.

They definitely wont shut down any reactors them the population will think somethings up

Then the entire world is perma-fucked...

Couldn't the CCP put out some "cover your own ass" cheapo excuse for the population like "we're checking the plants for maintenance and repairs so expect brief power outages" or are they really that stupid?

They're really that stupid. They won't even suggest failure because the subprivate who does so will get disappeared, if not then his commander would, if not then his commander, and so on and so forth until the top. When you rule an authoritarian oligarchy by force and fear, any dissent has to be quashed in favor of what's harmonious to the state. That's what happened in the USSR and it's what will happen in China. Nothing is a problem until it's broken, and even then it's not allowed to be talked about.

When the 3GD collapses, we're all gonna be fucked. At least America has somewhat of a chance. Just think about how screwed Japan, Korea, and SE Asia will be.

Yeah...they will claim it was taiwan sabotage and use the 150,000 troops doing a month long excercise in the south china sea to try and invade.

Yes communism is that dumb. The truth doesnt matter. All that matters is their hold on power by any means neccessary

You'd think they'd shut down the power plants and blame it on Taiwan then? That way they could prevent Fukushima x10 and have a flimsy causus belli to invade as well.

Meanwhile, the Global Times, a tabloid newspaper notorious for it's comically pro-CCP slant (even by Chinese newspaper standards), offers up this glorious article. (archive) The headline really says it all: Latest round of defamation to Three Gorges Dam shows lack of basic knowledge. I won't repost the whole article, but you can probably guess: it's all lies, the dam is totally fine, westerners want to make the Chinese look weak and incompetent, blah blah blah.

Also, in a post I made yesterday, I mentioned Mao Zedong writing a poem that foretold of building the TGD back in 1956. If you're curious, it's titled "Swimming":

I have just drunk the waters of Changsha
And come to eat the fish of Wuchang.
Now I am swimming across the great Yangtze,
Looking afar to the open sky of Chu.
Let the wind blow and waves beat,
Better far than idly strolling in a courtyard.
Today I am at ease.
"It was by a stream that the Master said--
'Thus do things flow away!' "
Sails move with the wind.
Tortoise and Snake are still.
Great plans are afoot:
A bridge will fly to span the north and south,
Turning a deep chasm into a thoroughfare;
Walls of stone will stand upstream to the west
To hold back Wushan's clouds and rain
Till a smooth lake rises in the narrow gorges.
The mountain goddess if she is still there
Will marvel at a world so changed.

That meme came in mind but replace fire with water.

The title of his poem sounds like a bad omen of things to come....
