Because it's considered the "moral" thing to do. Progressives and that part of the left have always considered it to be a moral issue, so there is no problem with them being intolerant because those are bad people/views. When you frame offensive jokes, the people who make them, divergent openions, etc in terms of it perpetuating harm its easier for their sheep to try and have them banned.

Oh, I know how they justify it. But in doing so, they've given me my own moral justification for doing the same to them. If your life mission is to make it so I can't express myself and can never see or hear anyone who thinks remotely like I do, then fighting to financially ruin you and put an end to your power in society becomes a fight for my own personal fundamental rights and sanity.
So many libertarians and conservatives are still in denial about this. Stop giving money to people who hate you. It doesn't matter if they made a product that's "good." These people absolutely will ruin your life if they're given half the chance. Look at what they tried to do to the Covington Catholic kids. Look at how they dox middle school kids on Twitter for edgy jokes. Look at how they still can barely contain their hatred and contempt for Mitt Romney despite him willingly being the biggest RINO traitor stooge for the left of all time. You're not the exception. And if you're having trouble finding the motivation to not consoom the latest Marvel comic or the latest album by that Antifa supporting heavy metal band, or whatever, remember the words of a certain comedian who fell prey to the blacklist.
Find other creators, independent preferably, who are at the very least politically moderate. There is so much stuff out there by decent people who actually think for themselves who need your support a lot more than the various woke entertainment conglomerate monoliths. Have some standards. Demand a basic level of respect from someone before you give them any kind of support whatsoever, be it money, a positive review, or anything else.

Their primary weapon is gaslighting. They always lie, and like re-framing events to switch who's who into a victim/aggressor dynamic, so watch out.
Never acknowledging that they're "correct," and never apologizing are top defenses. Next defense is, Don't make yourself a target by saying stuff that is easily twisted and easily taken out of context. The best way to do this is, only focus on stating your own beliefs and points, don't try to tell the mob why they're wrong or ever try to justify yourself to them.
Apologizing or explaining never fucking works, because their goal is never forgiveness or redemption, it's to trick people into incriminating themselves.
I've seen a lot of people get "canceled" because they basically had breakdowns after bending over backwards to apologize, but then the apology never being good enough for the woke mob, which turns into a piranha tank of gaslighting. This eventually leads to them rage quitting from the trauma.
The people who get "called in for cancelling" that DO survive are always the people who ignore the mob, who never play their game, never acknowledging them directly, and just keep doing what they're doing.

This chart isn't that inaccurate, the dark ages were 1,000 years of Christians fucking up everything. Rome was fairly advanced, then they burned it down (lol antifa) and did things like burn down all libraries, and convert bathhouses into churches. (Why bathe when you can pray?)
EDIT: I think I misspoke here and it probably came off as blaming Christianity only. They caused problems but I see it was more a domino effect. I know other issues existed. In a perfect timeline where some of these historical issues didn't happen, we would be more advanced, that's all.

it was moreso the breakdown of the movement of information and lack of funds for educational institutions that caused the "dark ages" rather then Christianity, It's the same reason there was an an Islamic Golden Age during this time (even though the Muslims probably burned their fair share of pagan books) due to the fact that Indian, Greek, Persian and Egyptian knowledge could all be brought together. anyways thats enough off topic sperging

The libraries and shit in Rome were being burned down by Germanic pagans and good old fashioned looters. The Christian monks were actually the big preservers of knowledge throughout most of the middle ages, up until the enlightenment started. Most of the classical literature from ancient Rome and Greece was kept and copied repeatedly by monks in monasteries, who were the only ones who had the time and resources to do that shit. Fuck man, just reading Dante's Inferno will let you know that medieval scholars in the 14th century were very much familiar with ancient Roman and Greek culture and knowledge. Also, all the oldest universities in the world, the prototypes for what eventually became the modern university structure? Religious institutions.
The real damage done by the fall of Rome was, unsurprisingly, political. The hub of western civilization basically got Balkanized, leading to thousands of years of on-and-off wars between all the new fractured nations. Big public projects of any kind were now limited to a few major urban centers, and information and goods no longer flowed as easily as it had flowed across the Roman Empire. Everything became more provincial. The Catholic Church actually was generally the exception to this rule because it was a third party that everyone respected, so in many ways it was a big positive, preserving force in a time marked by frequent chaos and bloodshed. I'm not a Catholic, but reading actual history, and not some fedora urban legends, I can see how valuable its influence was during the darkest parts of the "Dark Ages." Eventually it did become too dogmatic and stifling in some areas (punishment of Galileo, prevention of printing the Bible in common languages) but contrary to popular belief these decisions were almost always calculated moves to maintain political control, not ignorant superstition. How backwards Medieval Europe was has been grossly exaggerated by fedoras and people with a fetish for every culture except European ones (AKA-white guilt leftists and non-white supremacists of every stripe).
Besides, when it comes to things that set Europe back, the fall of old Rome has nothing on the Black Death. In many parts of Europe, 60% or more of the population died. The whole continent got depopulated in a way that wasn't seen again until the Native Americans contracted western diseases. Considering how the world is currently struggling with a little cough, the idea that enlightened atheism would have stopped the plague is doubtful, to say the least, especially since despite not understanding germ theory, they were practicing quarantine procedures and doctors wore protective gear that was actually fairly effective, even if they misunderstood why it worked.
No matter what outfit he wears, he always looks like a member of a very lame, edgy poseur rock band.
