Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Fat people is the short answer. We fucked our economy, tore apart families, spread fear, put life on hold to protect gluttons who have, for years, ignored all medical advice to stop eating so much shit, and instead invented a fake phobia and type of discrimination for anyone suggesting they put the fries down.
Fat people are among the biggest drains on the healthcare system and society as a whole. They ALWAYS need to go to the doctor and have expensive procedures done which drives up insurance costs. Many of them are lazy and bad workers because they're so fat they can barely move themselves. Quite a few will quit working by their 40s (or earlier) and leach off disability benefits because they're so fat to work and then do nothing but spend it on more shitty food, cigarettes, and booze. Then by 60 they'll be dead after being in and out of the hospital for years, costing the system yet more money that gets passed on to you via insurance. Hey, at least they die before getting any Social Security.

COVID-19 dropping fat people dead left and right would save people billions--or more.

So I guess a good rebuttal to that "do you want to kill grandma" emotional appeal argument is "why didn't you give a shit about the regular flu that's been far more lethal before 2020"?
I can't wear a mask for medical reasons. Every person who has challenged me has been fat. When they ask why I'm not wearing one, I ask what they weigh and they fuck off.

That said I have found that, if I've approaced stores before going in them saying I can't wear one, they've all, without exception bent over backwards to help. Which I'll admit, has been great. I've had some extremely good customer service lately, which has been quite heartening.

It's ranges from being very helpful with curbside pick up to staff throwing out people who have hassled me. Way I see it is, they don't make the rules. But if you talk to them and play the game then they're completely willing to help, often going above and beyond what I would expect a person on minimum wage to do

I know I’m going to sound really fucked up saying this, but it’s kind of karmically satisfying when these obese tumblrinas breaking the concrete beneath their feet get long term illnesses or when the grim reaper starts knocking. It completely shatters their world to nothingness and their smug smiles and bitchy demeanors turn homicidally insane in the snap of a finger.

Case in point.I guarantee you that most if not all those conditions are completely reversible.
This is why I hate my species.

So I guess a good rebuttal to that "do you want to kill grandma" emotional appeal argument is "why didn't you give a shit about the regular flu that's been far more lethal before 2020"?
I mean maybe. The problem is they will go "lol death toll!", and they aren't wrong.

That being said, the Flu is operating under different conditions. 1) natural viral evolution, wherein less lethal strains out-compete more lethal strains as killing your host reduces targets to spread to 2) natural & vaccination herd immunity, where enough people become immune to it through either vaccines or overcoming infections that it reduces the number of targets available 3) better treatments - doctors and hospitals better know how to treat symptoms of the flu, more over-the-counter relief is available, etc. etc.
Right now COVID is still working with about 99% of the population as live targets that can be infected, while IIRC the various influenza strains are working with 20-60% of the population as potential targets any given year - so as of Year 0, our COVID deaths will be higher, but as time progresses COVID will get less and less lethal.

Also, bringing up the Flu against those people is more likely to convince them that we need masks and lockdowns for the flu, not to stop masks and lockdowns for COVID.

Color me shocked.

Funny story. Nearly forgot to wear my 'mask' to the shop tonight. But remembered last minute.

I live in a very rural quiet part of the country.

Police cars buzzing about. Noise.

As I get up to the only shop in town, I see something I have never seen before in my life (here) about 2000 people gathered in the square before the shop. Tractors, tractors everywhere, fat women with beards. Like some kind of young farmers convention. Shop sold out of beer. Pub doing a brisk trade and people spilled out over the pavements.

Gee, sure glad I wore my mask.

One police car on the corner overseeing the whole flash event.

I didn't hear their accents. I don't think they were pikeys as there was no fighting. Just a load of country bumpkins feeling empowered by facebook. Standing around. Drinking beer. Being fucking fat. Super.

Still had to wear the mask in the shop though. Got my beer and fucked off home.

Funnily enough, no one else out of the crowd of a thousand plus were wearing masks or practicing social distancing.

I get the impression the populi are sensing weakness and they know the police can't police everything. So we will see more of these cocky fucking flash mobs feeling like they got one over on the local plod and community. It's not difficult to organise 2000 people to turn up somewhere it seems. Most of the booze was from them anyway. The shop had most of its booze left and there was only one pub open. A small one. They brought their own. On their tractors. Lots of boy racer cars too.

I could not be fucking arsed to ask the nice police man 'what is this all about, officer'. Fuck them. I don't care. I got my booze and that's all I care about. Not a load of fucking orange scarey hairy sharons and karens. Gonna be a lot of disappointed boyz in the morning losing their virginity to that. What cunts.

But yeah, virus, social distancing.

I don't fucking think so.

Made me realise my worst nightmare:

What would happen should the head-choppers set up an impromptu head-chopping stall in the town centre?

Fuck all.

So vulnerable. And so many people ready to take advantage of that. And advertising it to others.

I probably shouldn't be giving 'people' ideas.

And so the circle turns...

What medical condition? If you care to share.

REMINDER TO ALL MICHIGAN KIWIS
A petition is being circulated to repeal the 1945 Emergency Act that Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) is claiming gives her unlimited emergency authority. You can order copies to sign and circulate here.

Delta Airlines flight leaving Detroit for Atlanta obliged to turn around after two passengers refuse to wear masks. The flight eventually left. The article does not say what became of the two passengers.

July 23. (partially riots-related). Police arrest 20 protestors who were blocking summer school buses from leaving to pick up students. The protestors claimed they were concerned about COVID, but they was apparently some overlap with the local Floyd protestors.

Detroit Marathon cancelled. Instead, there will be a virtual race.

MICHIGAN RECAP
Second wave of official cases is here; second wave of official deaths is not. Masks are now mandatory. People starting to snap. Lawsuits grind on ever so slowly. Petitions begin circulation.

OFFICIAL DEATH TOLL
Confirmed cases and deaths only.
The stats are somewhat off this week, on account of 16 deaths being removed from the record upon review of data. Since I don't know exactly when and where these people didn't die (but a lot of them seem to be in Wayne County, in the Detroit Metro), the real weekly death toll is probably slightly higher than my figures are showing. There is still no second wave of deaths, however. Officially, there were 6 deaths since yesterday, plus 8 old deaths newly identified.
MDHHS said:
*During a data quality assessment review of deaths, manual data entry errors were discovered, leading to a decrease of 16 in the cumulative death total. The errors in death ascertainment occurred during local case investigations and involved mistakenly indicating individuals as being deceased who were not. This adjustment affects the cumulative death totals for impacted counties and statewide. Reviews are being conducted as part of ongoing efforts to ensure data quality and accurate case and death reporting in Michigan.
**The deaths announced today includes 8 deaths identified during a Vital Records review. See cumulative data page for more information.

Detroit Metro (pop. 3,860,000 total; 1,796/sq. mi.; 694/sq km):*

43,460 confirmed / 4,641 dead
41,791 confirmed / 4,627 dead last week
(i.e. at least 14 new deaths, down 17 from the previous week)
Normal Detroit Metro Death Rate: 104 per day, 728 per week.**

Other Michigan (6,120,000; 65/sq. mi.; 25/sq km):

33,518 confirmed / 1,508 dead
31,389 confirmed / 1,490 dead last week
(i.e. at least 18 new deaths, the same as the previous week)
Normal not-Detroit Death Rate: 167 per day, 1,169 per week.**

All Michigan (9,990,000; 103/sq. mi.; 40/sq km):

76,978 confirmed / 6,149 dead / 57,502 recovered = 13,327 active cases^
73,180 confirmed / 6,117 dead / 55,162 recovered = 11,901 active cases last week^
(at least 32 dead (down 17) and 2,340 recovered (up 1,045 since last week))
Net change: + 1,426 active cases since last Saturday.^
Normal Michigan Death Rate: 271 per day, 1,897 per week.**

Death toll doubled since: April 23.

State Gov site, total, includes breakdowns by sex, age, race and ethnicity - archive is useless after redesign.
*Here defined as the City of Detroit, and Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne Counties, minus state and federal prisoners, who are not counted towards any county's cases, but are kept in categories of their own.
** As of 2018.
^Here calculated based on confirmed cases and deaths only.

One Ann Arbor man allegedly killed by his roommate in a Corona-related dispute (archive). The suspect has been released from custody while the investigation continues (archive).
One Flint security guard allegedly murdered for telling a woman that her daughter needed to wear a mask in a dollar store. Multiple suspects are in custody (archive, A&N thread).
One Grand Ledge man shot and killed by police after allegedly stabbing another man in a mask dispute (archive).

Does anyone have a source on the claim that the amount of testing has gone up? Thanks! also what is the size of covid 19 particles?
US Tests mid July - Copy.png
I know I'm late, but according to this blog, there were 850,000 tests on Friday, July 17 alone.

I am just going to parse out the bit about schools not being safe. I hate hearing that so fucking much. 99.99% of children are not at even laughable risk of dying or being injured from COVID-19. A similar number of the teachers and staff are also at very little risk. I genuinely have no clue what people are talking about bringing this up. Also schools closed would not be such a big deal for me personally if not every other way to get my kid out of the house and interacting with her peers was also not closed to us or very much threatened to be.

Also, the seasonal flu doesn't have the same political/financial/social importance on testing/reporting deaths. If you get the flu, most people just stay home from work for a couple days, they don't go to their doctor to get tested. Also, the fact that hospitals were receiving as much as 32k per reported covid case is going to motivate much wider testing being conducted (if not outright lies and report inflation).

Also, while the criteria for "deaths" between the two are the same (person died, and their corpse tests positive for having the infection), in normal times they didn't test everyone that died for the seasonal flu, unlike COVID now where you could splatter yourself in front of a train, and they'd be testing what's left of your foot for COVID, and debating if they could count each detached limb as a different case.
