Extremely common. Not just a Southern US thing, it's long been traditional obit formula all over. (At least in my experience dabbling in genealogy research in Canada.) Newspaper obituaries were limited space, so it economizes word count when you need to list dozens of people and all of their spouses.

Family cemeteries are a lot more common in the South and New England. As said above it's a holdover from colonial and early settlement. Establishing private cemeteries is pretty hard today though, in the US at least, in a lot of countries they're more common even now; zoning boards here will make you jump through hoops for it. The Williams have probably had it for at least a hundred years, longer if the family has lived in the same area for a number of generations.

Poor Becky though. I wonder if she'd been helping her mom out half as much as she's had to cater to Amber in the last few months. If so, she definitely made that choice herself, but she'd probably be kicking herself for it now.

I feel for Becky, That's a hard loss. For someone who's struggled with depression, she sure works against herself. No ambition, no 'purpose' in life, not integrated into the community (which is probably huge in Kentucky) beyond going to stores to buy things..not even coworkers you could have some camaraderie with, etc..and hours and hours to think about how much your life sucks. I hope this gives her some get-up-and-go to do something with her life.

I know I'm basically repeating what everyone else has said, but my heart does go out to both Destiny and Becky (even if Norma wasn't that good of a person). I know from experience that losing a parent is rough at any age and I really hope Becky finds some sort of comfort. I think it sucks that she had to be with Amber when she should have been with her mom in her final days (even if you can't pinpoint the final days sometimes). Anyway sorry for the rambling!

Honestly, I think she already has what she wants and her “purpose/ambition” is to basically indulge in her hobbies with nothing impeding that. It’s one of the reasons why I have little sympathy for her. Still, her mother dying can’t have been easy to deal with, especially if she wasn’t there. This is one of the few times I have some feeling for her.

Putting the spouse's name in parentheses is the norm but I think they were referring to putting a boyfriend/girlfriend in there when they're not married.

I don't think that's a "Southern" thing so much as a sign of changing cultural norm: marriage rates have gone down and there are more people who spend years in a non-marriage relationship with someone, possibly even having children with them and buying a house and doing all the other things ordinarily associated with marriage. Decades ago, you wouldn't put someone's girlfriend/boyfriend in the obituary because a girlfriend/boyfriend typically wasn't a close member/friend of the family—if you wanted to have a closer relationship with someone and be a part of their family, that was what marriage was for.

I'm more curious about this reference to Jerry as Norma's "life-long partner" when she had previously been married to different people and was supposedly married to Jerry. That may have just been an error on the part of whoever wrote the obit.

I just realized, now that becky moved, she's probably not going to get to her pill mill often enough. Being off meds at this time is going to be catastrophic.

Amber isn't going to be there for Becky (or Destiny), narcs aren't able to do that. They turn anyone's pain back into a spotlight for herself. Remember when Norma was first diagnosed with Cancer, and amber was sobbing her eyes out constantly, and becky had to pick up her pieces, when it was BECKY's mom going through Cancer. Becky's going to end up having to console Amber over her own tragedy.

I don't know why Norma needs to lie "in state" for 4 hours before the funeral, when they're already having a visitation the day before. Isn't visitation just another word for viewing, or a less spirited version of a wake?

Nope, it's a meme from the videogame Call of Duty Advanced Warfare. The game starts with a funeral cutscene where you are prompted to "press F to pay respects". It was widely mocked for it's absurdity and subsequently became a meme.

I doubt it, back at the gaycare Becky had started moving into the basement and making herself a little mancave down there. You know, the only place Amber can't go because of the stairs. That's pretty telling. It's normal to want a bit of alone time every now and then and maybe even set up a space for your hobbies, but Becks does pretty much nothing all day, and it's kind of weird if you have a whole entire house to yourself yet still have to set up a whole room just to get some space. It's not like Becks is into woodworking and needs a place to store her power tools, or a place where she can work on her novel without being disturbed.
Becks has emotionally checked out of the relationship a long time ago, Amber will 100% NOT offer any support to her grieving GF, she has moved her to a city she has always hated and where she is going to feel very out of place, may or may not have pissed off/alienated her best friends, and on top of that Amber's redneck fortune will be gone as soon as she gets her $30,000 hospital bill. It would be extremely shitty to leave Amber now that she is battling cancer, that's probably the only reason why she sticks around. Maybe it's a Destiny situation and A&B have broken up already but still live together, so Amber is just going to keep pretending they are super in love and fuck 10 times a day.
