Creepy Unsolved Mysteries - From unsolved murders to unidentified people to unexplained supernatural events, what are some of the creepiest unsolved mysteries you've ever heard of?
Slight aside but I have such a hard time looking at videos about missing people where the YouTuber slaps their face on the thumbnail. I know it's an autistic thing to be annoyed by and I'll gladly take my puzzle pieces, but it just pisses me off more than it really should. View attachment 1403546
That's one of those things that will repel me from a channel. I guess it doesn't repel most people, but I really can't stand that, especially with videos on somber topics.
Hell, I had to unsub from LinusTechTips just because I was sick of seeing Linus making a stupid face every day, and even he's admitted he has to do that because it really does bring in the clicks.
David Paulides has Youtube channel with a lot of videos, on location, of the strange disappearances he has talked about in his book.
This is one of the strangest ones where an 84 year old man with very bad knees disappears with zero trace. The strangest part is he was with another guy and this guy was only 50 yards away from Maurice Dametz when he disappeared with no noise at all. Search teams with dogs found nothing, not a single shred of any kind of evidence.
Dorothy Kilgallen's death is interesting. If you glance at what her ruled death was, which was alcohol and barbiturates, you'd assume she OD'd. If you dive deeper into her story, it's sketchy. Dorothy Kilgallen was a reporter and a panelist from What's My Line? She also was about to release information that investigated on the death of JFK when she died. All of her documents from her investigation disappeared when she died. If she did commit suicide as they claimed, why did all her investigative notes disappear from her home? Really makes you think.
Her details:
When her hairdresser found her she was propped up in bed, still wearing her make-up, false eyelashes, false hairpiece, and earrings. And one more thing--dead to this world. Her hairdresser and friend Marc Sinclaire, found this odd, as she would normally never go to bed in this condition. But that was not the only strange thing her hairdresser noticed when he found the body. Dorothy was not wearing her regular pajamas, but instead a blue matching peignoir and robe. A book was on her bed, a book she had finished reading two weeks earlier. Her reading glasses, which she needed, were nowhere nearby. She was found in the third floor bedroom of the townhouse. She always slept in the fifth floor bedroom.
Her husband, Richard Kollmar was asleep in the fourth story of the townhouse. He gave inconsistent accounts of what happened that night. He claimed that Dorothy arrived home at 11:30 p.m., in good spirits, and went off to write her column. But those who saw her in the Regency lounge reported her being there far past midnight 2 a.m. Later, when asked by friends about Dorothy’s JFK investigation, he replied, “I'm afraid that will have to go to the grave with me." And it did when Kollmar died of a drug overdose in 1971.
Later, it would be discovered that her JFK file that she had been compiling for years would go missing.
Today, Dorothy Kilgallen’s name will go unrecognized by the current generation but she was at one time one of the first of a new breed of celebrity journalists. By the mid-50s, she was the most famous journalist in America, made even more apparent by her 15-year stint as a panelist on the popular CBS show, What’s My Line. The events surrounding her untimely and mysterious death have become intertwined with the lore of the Kennedy assassination. She would be one of many suspicious deaths in the case.
She started her career in journalism at the age of 17 covering crime stories and earned a reputation of good, thorough reporter--someone that left no stone unturned. By 1950 her column was running in 146 papers, and reaping 20 million readers. Kilgallen’s style was a mixture of gossip, movie star news, and politics.
As time went on her reporting got closer to heart of power in this country. She was one of the first reporters to imply, which we now know to be true, that the CIA was working with the mob to assassinate Fidel Castro. Declassified documents show that the FBI was monitoring Kilgallen’s activities since the 1930s while the CIA closely watched her travels overseas.
Devastated by the news of John Kennedy’s death (of whom she met on a White House tour with her son), Kilgallen increasingly turned her attention, and her impressive crime investigation skills, to the assassination of the president. Dorothy Kilgallen quickly made a name for herself as one of the first (and few) people in the mainstream press to question the Warren Commission report. Kilgallen pulled no punches as she wrote the first article on the FBI’s intimidation of witnesses, interviewed Acquilla Clemons a witness to the shooting of Officer J. D. Tippit whom the Warren Commission never questioned (Clemons claimed to see two men at the scene of the murder—none matching Oswald’s description), and was successful in interviewing key figures such as Jack Ruby.
Kilgallen’s death has many mysterious elements to it. The autopsy showed her to be in overall good health, but tests found her to be over the legal limit for alcohol consumption. The cause of death would be ruled as "acute ethanol and barbiturate intoxication, circumstances undetermined." In an odd turn of events, Dr. James Luke, a New York City medical examiner that did the autopsy, did not sign the death certificate. It was signed by another physician, Dr. Dominick DiMaio, who when questioned, did not know why his name was appeared on the certificate, nor was he working out of Manhattan at the time.
In 1968 a test using a new process determined from saved tissue samples, proved that Dorothy Kilgallen died of fatal mix of three barbiturates: secobarbital, amobarbital, and pentobarbital. Kilgallen was not known as a drug user. She was spotted at the Regency hotel, chatting with a stranger in a booth. Perhaps a source? Did this man slip a mickey in her drink? Her favorite drink included the ingredient, quinine, which can be used to mask the taste of barbiturates. The Regency was seven blocks from her home and it is unknown how she got to the townhouse or what transpired during this time. She apparently was not among friends in her final hours.
In 1975, Dorothy's son Dickie, was contacted by the FBI concerning his mother's JFK papers. He told them the notes were still missing. Notice that the FBI was interested in the papers at this late date, after they had long decided that Oswald was the murderer of the president. Why would they be so interested now?
When those who go to murder, and desire to make the victim’s death appear as a suicide, they all have one thing working against them. They can never know enough about the intended victim’s personal habits. In this case, if Dorothy Kilgallen’s death was a murder, the killers were not aware of her favorite bedroom, her sleep attire, her need for reading glasses, or for that matter, the book by her side was one that she had already read.
So was she murdered? Like so many tragic happenings like this the evidence for a murder is circumstantial. If she was murdered, we’ll never know the names of the people who did it. They are forever outside of our knowledge and justice system. Sometimes the bad guys win. But, to answer the question, yes I do believe she was murdered. She knew too much and most likely ticked off too many powerful people. Of course, there is no way to prove a thing.
However, her JFK file remains missing.
In closing, here is a quote from the FBI’s FOIA section on Dorothy Kilgallen:
“Ms. Kilgallen and Director Hoover corresponded with each other. Miss Kilgallen printed information in her column several times about cases involving the FBI, none of which were true. Dorothy Kilgallen died in November 1965, from alcohol and barbiturates.”
I absolutely cannot stand this shit. I fucking hate it. It is incredibly disrespectful and just reeks of narcissism. It just screams "Yeah, this person is missing, but what about ME!"
What makes it even worse is that most of the comments on these videos are people praising the Youtubers and not talking about victims of these crimes or what might've happened to them.
I've seen at least one horror/true crime youtuber put blood splatter on top of a pic. Like dude, I know it's scary, but try to have at least a little tact when talking about an innocent person who had their life brutally taken from them in a manner they didn't deserve, yeah? Even though "I wouldn't care because I'd be dead", how would you feel if your murder went unsolved and then some clout chaser slammed a cheap bloodstain on one of the happy moments of your life? I think it may have been ShroudedHand? Whoever it was, people called out how disrespectful it was and I think he stopped.
This one took place in the very early 1960's, in wealthy suburban Connecticut. I won't give too much away but suffice it to say it is very thought-provoking, and I have my own ideas about what happened
that is, I suspect she was a highly-intelligent [but under-the-radar] person living below her potential and she wanted some drama and a cover for escape. I also suspect she set the 'suspicious fire' that killed her parents.
On Nov 19, 1988 Michaela Garecht and her friend Katrina Rodriguez walked to a market called Rainbow Market in Heyward California to by snacks. They rose their scooters there and left them out when they got there. After buying their snacks they headed home only to realize they forgot their scooters. They went back to get them and Michela realized her scooter was farther down the parking lot near a parked car. When went to get it but when she did a man grabbed her and dragged her into the car. Katrina was too shocked to move as her friend was dragged into the car screaming. Katrina went to a clerk who called the police. Katrina was the only witness and described the man in as white and his early 20s, having long blonde dark hair, and having an old sedan. that was wither tan or cream colored. A man named Loren Herzog was believed to be the suspect years later but there was never any proof. After Jaycee Dugard, a girl who disappeared in 1991 was found alive in 2009 there has been more interest in the case.
My bet: Alphabet Recruiting
Alphabet agencies used to recruit out of semi-obscure publications that autists would buy (prior to the interwebz). Dime-store puzzle books used to be the norm. Crappy trivia books also.
ALSO: They recruit out of standardized testing. In the USA, standarized testing is required by law for all public schools. The tests will sometimes throw a curveball, buried in the mundane simplistic material. The problem will be insanely hard, or requiring of a PhD in order to solve. The word trickles up through the Dept. of Education and the kid is placed on a watch list for later contact.
edit: I wanted to add - personal creepy story, for my new favorite thread.
Trying not to PL, hard with personal stories.
About 5 years ago, I'm on a biz trip to a bumblefuck town in the mountains of Wyoming. Real high up, like enough to get you sick and start suffering if you aren't acclimated. I arrive and do my job, then hit the motel that had a restaurant/bar.
Everywhere I look. Everywhere, are 'Missing Child' postings. In the motel bar - on a bulletin board, at the motel- taped to the front desk. Even at the job.
I finally asked the bartender on my 3rd night: "Hey, what's with all the missing kid posters?".
She replied: "We have a problem with missing kids here, so many kids just... disappear. Nobody knows if it's b/c of child abduction or trafficking. We are missing SO many kids."
A local women drinking at the bar gently tugged on my arm pleading: "Please help us, tell your company HQ, tell SOMEONE....". She was helped away by her man, sobbing.
I spoke to a few colleagues. We all decided that due to the fact a truck route went through the town, probably truckers were grabbing kids. The problem with that theory - most of the kids were taken in the residential area of the town, a good distance from the highway and truck stop. Also, there weren't that many truckers, it's a high road and traveling up 6000 ft can really make you sick. In the winter the route was so hazardous, the roads were closed with gates every few miles. Most of the winter the town was isolated, yet kids went missing.
It was a creepy, sinister place. Beautiful vistas as well. I saw herds of mule deer roaming the company campus. Many nights, the entire town lost power for an hour or 2. Total blackout, then back on. Very creepy.

I don't know, seems too complicated to me. I've always thought, that if you are capable enough, they will approach you someday. Just purring something this mysterious will cause people to ask questions and point they fingers to usual suspects.
On the 5th of November 1979, a 15 year school boy failed to come home. His parents initially thought he stayed the night with his brother and sister in law, but when he didn't show up at school or dinner the next day, they knew something was wrong.
Witnesses weeks later came forward to say that they saw a boy (fitting Martin's description) with a six foot blond man. They were spotted at various points from Gloucester station to Earl's Court station. In one account the blond man was seen throwing the boy up against a wall outside Gloucester Station. In another account the man was seen to have his hand on the back of the boy's neck and was heard to say "Don't run".
There was a huge media campaign but nothing ever came of it. Martin's belongings, remains, and the blond man have never been found.
His brother Kevin made the suggestion that Martin was taken to be a sex slave for the VIP paedophile ring operating at the time. There were at least two places that were suspected (at the time) to places which catered to the specific perversions of the Elite; the Elm Guest House in Barons Court, and Dolphin Square. The Allens were in fact living at Hyde Park Gate as the father was working as a chauffeur for the Australian High Commissioner. (Interesting to note that Martin's father was connected through his job to the notorious paedo and murderer Sidney Cooke) This exposed the family to many high ranking officials and even royals. Kevin says that when he mentioned this theory to the lead detective, he was warned off pursuing this line of inquiry.
in 1998 as part of an investigation, a known paedophile in Liverpool was found to have a bizarre shrine, complete with headstone, to Martin although he was later cleared of having any connection to the case.
According to police due to a flood the original files were lost, but some eventually were recovered.
The blond man was described
- six feet tall
-white blond hair, with no part
-with a moustache
- in his 30s
-well built
- wearing a denim jacket and jacket (interestingly, this was the 'uniform' of Gay ops plain clothes policemen)
If the blond man is still alive, he would be in his late 70s, early 80s
Abigail Williams and Liberty German: On February 13, 2017, Abigail Williams and Liberty German were dropped off by Liberty’s older sister at an abandoned railway near a hiking path in Delphi, Indiana. The two girls promised to meet with a family member near a bridge later on that day, but the duo never showed up. At first the police didn’t expect any foul play, but the girls’ bodies were found the next day about half a mile away from the bridge. The only lead investigators had were Snapchat uploads of the girls walking along the railroad, and an unidentified man approaching them. The last thing that remains from their encounter is a chilling audio clip of the man saying, “Down the hill.”
This case has been mentioned before in this thread but it's worth reiterating because it's so disturbing. I can't imagine how scared those poor girls must have been when that man approached them. The fact that it's been three years and no justice has been found is depressing.
This is one that always gave me chills, especially looking at the pictures and putting myself in their position. I've always greatly enjoyed topics like these, and while of course I feel bad for the victims it always makes me especially grateful to be safe at home when reading about them. I can only imagine the chills the cop who found them felt when watching the video they took, though perhaps that was left for a detective to watch.
I'll probably add more at some point, but for now The Tristan Brubach case is another one that gave me chills when I first read it. To give a summary, the "Liederbach Tunnel", as it was known to locals on the outskirts of Höchst, Germany, was the subject of various urban legends and even though it offered a useful shortcut to local schools and parks, kids avoided it because of how eerie it was, combined with the stories surrounding it.
Tristan Brubach was let out from school early after complaining about his back hurting. He was known to have taken a bus after leaving school and then walked to a nearby train station. At around 1:46 p.m., Tristan was spotted on CCTV footage from a shop inside the train station. Standing nearby him at the time was an adult male, but the footage is too blurry to make out a description of the man. Between 2:15 and 2:45 PM, give or take a few minutes, Tristan would be seen by two separate classmates at the train station. These are students that got released on-schedule, and were now making their way home. These classmates couldn't offer up specific details - such as the time or location they saw Tristan - but both claimed that he appeared to be alone. One of the classmates said he looked like he was waiting for someone, but it was an uncertain claim.
Over the next forty minutes or so, there is no word on Tristan's whereabouts. However, at around 3:20 that afternoon, a woman walking her dog at a nearby park claimed to encounter Tristan. This park was just a few blocks away from the Frankfurt-Höchst train station, and this woman claimed that Tristan was sitting on a park bench, smoking a cigarette, when she walked by with a small dog.
According to this woman, Tristan struck up a conversation with her, and seemed to be a charming and friendly young man. He said he loved animals, and pet her dog a couple of times, before she took off.
Later, she would claim to walking for a moment, before getting a look at the young man that she had just encountered. She described two older-looking men sitting down on either side of Tristan; both of whom, she recalled, looked - in her words - "probably foreign."
This would be the last time that Tristan Brübach would be seen alive.
Roughly two hours, at 5:08 PM, police dispatchers received a call from teachers at a local daycare. The dispatchers were told that the body of a young man had been found inside a tunnel, nearby the Höchst train station.
Police would later describe the crime scene as one of the worst ever discovered in Frankfurt. Some even proclaimed it the most gruesome in post-war Germany. In fact, investigators were unable to physically identify the deceased young man, having to rely upon a label inside the young man's schoolbag, which bore his name: Tristan Brübach.
Investigators were able to determine that Tristan had been beaten and choked unconscious several feet away from his final resting place; likely outside, as he approached the tunnel. They were able to discover that at least one of his shoes had come off during the struggle, which had then been placed on top of his body afterwards.
Despite being assaulted and choked unconscious, Tristan had been dragged into the tunnel. While unconscious, he had been dragged to the edge of the walkway, which overlooked a small egress of the nearby river. There, investigators would theorize that his throat had been cut from ear-to-ear, with the wound being deep enough to reach the spine. He was then stabbed numerous times, and investigators would theorize that the young man had been 'bled' into the river, so-to-speak. I apologize for the phrasing, but I'm at a loss for any other words to match the description of events given by police.
After a few minutes of this had passed, the killer of the young man then committed perhaps the most gruesome act of all, and began mutilating the body of thirteen-year-old Tristan Brübach. Investigators would note that the boy's testicles had been removed from his body, and a section of his thigh and upper leg had been cut off.
These body parts were then removed from the scene, likely taken by the culprit. Police were unable to find Tristan's backpack, so it was theorized that the killer had absconded from the scene with it.
After this incredibly brutal assault and mutilation, Tristan's body was then posed to look like he was sleeping in the Leiderbach Tunnel. It is unknown how long, exactly, he had been laying there before his discovery at around 5:00 PM.
The prime suspect is a male aged between 20 and 30 with either a cleft lip or a large scar on his upper lip and of a generally unkempt appearance. This man was seen by several people, all of whom contributed to drawing up the composite sketch. The sketch was shared with law enforcement authorities worldwide, but no suspects matching the image have emerged. The first person to see the suspect on the day of the murder was a 12-year-old girl walking through the Liederbach Tunnel, where Brübach would later be murdered. The girl reported that she saw the man coming out from behind a bush. He was wearing a hat, with a ponytail visibly dangling from the back of it. About a week later, a man turned up at the offices of a law firm and told a lawyer, "I've only just been released from prison and I've already screwed up." The lawyer directed the man to another law firm, which dealt with criminal law matters, but the man never went there. A week after this sighting, another witness – who gave Brübach private academic tuition – came forward. She stated that a few days before Brübach's murder, she had seen him in the company of a man who closely resembled the composite sketch. She was sure that she had seen this man more than once in the recent past. The woman believed to have been the last person to see Brübach alive, at Bruno-Asch-Anlage, provided a description that differed from that of the ponytailed man. According to this witness, she was sitting on a park bench when Brübach, who was alone, sat down on the same bench and smoked a cigarette. The witness briefly engaged in small talk with Brübach before leaving the bench. After she had left, she turned around and saw two men sit down on the bench – one to Brübach's left and one to his right. Brübach was murdered between 10 and 25 minutes later, 500 metres away in the Liederbach Tunnel.
There are other details I've left out, and I've included the link at the beginning if you want to read more into it, but I'll mention one last peculiarity of the case, and a creepy theory.
On 7 April 1998, the day after Brübach's funeral, a man called the police to report that he was the murderer. He reported that he was at Höchst railway station and would wait there for the police to come and arrest him. When the police arrived, he was nowhere to be found. Parts of the call were made public and can be heard on YouTube. The caller has never been identified. Perhaps this was a hoax, but there are plenty of examples of killers doing things like this so it could also have easily been the actual killer, maybe searching for an adrenaline rush or more attention from the crime.
"This is the theory that sounds the most like a creepy urban legend that would be passed down by teenagers, but it actually has some basis in reality.
In the months after Tristan's murder, testimony provided by dozens of witnesses - mostly children - described a strange older man hanging around the train station in the time period that Tristan had been brutally murdered. According to these descriptions, which began to flood in after the investigation had already begun to falter, this was a homeless man that lived nearby.
Like I just described a moment ago, one of Tristan's former-teachers had described seeing him in the presence of older men. One of these men, a blond-haired man that matched the description of the suspect, was described as very unkempt and disheveled - perhaps even homeless.
Another classmate of Tristan's would later provide statements (as an adult) which claimed that this man was a local vagabond, who was known to local kids. This former-classmate said this man looked exactly like the police sketch of Tristan's killer, and described him as being an intimidating individual that was known to follow and terrifying local children. According to this classmate, this strange man had followed him across the street on more than one occasion, crossing whenever he did and then following him for several blocks.
This terrifying possibility is given more credence when you factor in the testimony of children from a local daycare - the daycare that had actually called in the discovery of Tristan's body, surprisingly. According to kids at this daycare, a man matching the description had been seen lurking in a section of woods nearby, indicating that he lived within. In the time period around Tristan's murder, this man had asked a group of children to buy something for him in town, and even offered "gifts" to children.
Almost every time, the kids had run away and reported this behavior, but it wasn't until Tristan Brübach was murdered that adults began to take this gossip seriously. By that point, the man had disappeared, and investigators only had vague statements from children as any evidence.
One of the only concrete details that seemed unanimous, among all of these children, was that the man did not have any kind of funny-sounding accent. This implied that he was a local, and not a foreigner, as originally-theorized."
The disappearance of Susan Walsh is a bizarre unsolved case, involving a laundry list of suspects and strange occurrences in the events leading up to her disappearance.
A former stripper/erotic model turned investigative journalist, Susan Walsh was known for infiltrating and writing about both the NYC vampire subculture and the Russian Mafia. It's widely suspected she was killed or forced into sexual slavery by the Russian gangsters in Brooklyn, but nothing have ever been concretely proven what happened to her or where she went.
She was also related to rock musician Joe Walsh by marriage.
McAfee addressed the 'sex-trafficking globalist elite' theories on a recent podcast. He said that (paraphrase) "...globalists don't need to pay exorbitant fees or sweat the details of sex slaves. They get whatever they want at a cheap price. It happens, but not that often, and it's not that important. What IS important is the constant battle for your hearts, and minds. ..."
I tend to believe him. I stumble across Q-Boomer posts occasionally, and how they are POSSESSED by the thought of intricate global child/women sex-trafficking rings. I'm thinking at this point it might all be a red herring. I guess the Maxwell case will shed more light.
However, McAfee is a coke-addled boomer that is well past his prime and living on the run and disconnected from most of the world. I'm not sure his experiences translate.
But, my story was 100% true. That little town in the mountains of Wyoming was hemorrhaging children. Almost every family was affected, and no one knew how or why they were disappearing.
The Isdal Woman.
The popular theory is she was a spy. I think she was a high class call girl.
Long story short: A woman was found burned to death in a valley in Norway in 1972 (I think, exact year is slipping my mind). She had swallowed a huge amount of sleeping pills. All tags were removed from her clothes. Belongings were found in a train station. She’s still unidentified.

I can't stand the ones where they try to make it all spooky for the teens. Especially when the mystery concerns a child.
Dark Curiosities is very respectful and has a lovely Scottish accent. Plus she actually tries to give some background info on the victim if possible so you can visualize them as a real person. Some of these baiters jump right to "Ooh! Spooky murder!".
Sometimes friends and relatives post comments. I wouldn't want to see my loved one's story with a fake blood splatter clickbait thumbnail.
I once saw a video about a missing girl that looked exactly like my sister. Who happens to be missing. But it wasn't her. This girl disappeared in the late 70s/early 80s. It was surreal. They showed a photo of her with a child that looked exactly like my niece. And they were on what looked like a farm. My sister took her kids and ran off to some farm in the south for a few months many years ago. I don't think the photo was a mistake. It was just an extremely eerie coincidence. I didn't point it out in the comments because I didn't want any conspiracy theorists or Mandella Effecters bothering me. But I still think about how weird it was. I did a doubletake. I almost contacted the channel owner before I heard when this girl actually went missing.

Dark Curiosities is great, ReignBot is good sometimes but far too often she's like "I could have done more on this but I was lazy, look it up on your own" which isn't what you want to tell people you want to subscribe or give you money on Patreon
tl;dw, Canadian teenager starts acting really strange, hangs around at a Tim Hortons for a while before vanishing. Possibly ended up catfished by a sex trafficker.
