Disaster Fireworks Warehouse Explosion in Beirut - Spoiler: It wasn't Fireworks it was 2,500+ tons of High-Explosive Ammonium Nitrate

Article (Archive)

Beirut, Lebanon (CNN)

A large explosion rocked the Lebanese capital Beirut on Tuesday, damaging buildings and offices around the city.
The source of the explosion was a major fire at a warehouse for firecrackers near the port in Beirut, the state-run National News Agency reported.
A red cloud hung over the city in the wake of the blast as firefighting teams rushed to the scene to try to put out the fire.
Local news reported multiple people were wounded in the incident.
This is a breaking story, more to follow.

Attaching all of the videos I grabbed from this guys twitter just now as well, here's one of them:

Here are some links to other posts in the thread with more content, you may need to go to the posts directly to see the media:

Couple more angles of the explosions, seems everyone in Beirut holds their phone vertically. Buckle up for a very delayed boom in the second video.

Here's a different angle. Notice how the guys recording it say "Allahu Akbar".

EDIT: Direct embed

Found this slowmo of the explosion in which you can see the fireball and airblast more clearly

I think this is just a slowed down version of this that I grabbed from twitter (https://twitter.com/saadmohseni/status/1290678176574779395):

Also this for another, closer angle (https://twitter.com/realdavereilly/status/1290690743217119235):

And you retards thought putting it all in one place is a good idea? :story:

It was explosive sodium nitrate holy shit

What remains of the dock:

There’s a radiation spike picked up near Italy/scicily. Let me try to archive this or take a screenshot

I know that there are several vids on here but here's a 2+ minute concatenation of multiple angles and some security camera footage of blast sites.

Translation: Preliminary security information talks about 2,700 tons of confiscated ammonia in the port exploded during the process of welding a small hole to prevent theft

That actually makes more sense. This was something so explosive that it put out most of the fire. PEPCON (mentioned above) didn't even manage that. Plus it takes a lot of energy in a shockwave to create a cloud like that.

Already have the death toll at 10.

Grain burns. It'll burn very hot, but no boom. Grain dust on the other hand, is a solid fueled thermobaric explosive.

Watch this loadout bin failure. They are lucky something ignited the dust as it was building up otherwise there would have been a boom instead of a fireball.

That's no granary loading bin failure, that me after I've had a spicy curry.

Reflex.

The Cypriots did exactly the same, a few years ago. Confiscated a load of explosives, stored it in the sun packed up right next to the islands main power station. That whole region is full of fuckwits.

With an explosion of that magnitude, could it be possible that the grain was vaporized in the initial blast and then the dust was what caused the super massive explosion?

What's being lost on people here is the impact of this, Lebanon was already totally fucked economically, in a massive recession and needing international debt to stay afloat. Lebanon was facing mass protests as a result of corruption and long standing sectarian issues. Having half of your heavily populated central district entirely blown up is massive. This isn't even talking about the long standing issues like the power supply, sometimes lasting up to even 22 hours without power. Many people in the country were already saying it was time for civil war or revolution because of the government's corruption. Unlike other middle eastern countries, due to Lebanon's geography (mount Lebanon), it has the least oil of any middle eastern nation(ergo the energy problems).

Lebanon is such a small country there's reports everywhere in Lebanon this was heard, every Lebanese person is aware something is off whether or not they know the news. Lots of people in this thread are quick to shit on the Lebanese but they make due with what little they have. You definitely can't blame the actions of the government on the people when the people want them out of power and have been taking part in active demonstrations.

They just want to be funny and based for internet points.

I think the fact that this does appear to be an accident, even if it was a product of stupidity, has made this one tough to witness.

There is a lot to shit on Lebanon about, but honestly, they've kind of been done a better job at not being just another messed up piece of the Middle East lately, with getting the pro-Hezbollah government to resign and kicking out Syria.

Requiring the various religions to be represented in their government does allow Hezbollah in, but it does tame them, too.

Its surprising that so many sources are quick to say "Fireworks" when the story is so new.
Well those sources are the government's official word on the event.

I cant fucking wait for all the toneless memes that will come from this.
One of the news streams showed there were groups of people taking selfies in front of the carnage less than an hour after it happened.
