Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Grandma loves cats,

Her cats left and caught corona

Cats love grandma and they are eating her.
And then they're gonna eat me!

OHHHH MYYY GOOOOOOOOOOOOD

... anyway, I'm told that the furlough funding stuff on this side of the pond is tightening up as of the end of August, with businesses expected to pay part of the costs instead of just claiming money from the gov. Makes sense.

Suddenly a lot of places that appeared to survive are declaring bankruptcy, or laying off huge numbers of staff.

The economic effects of the lockdowns here were delayed by all of the government's largesse, but now they definitely making their presence known. It's going to be a rough couple of months.

And meanwhile, everyone has gone to the beach for the weekend, to enjoy the glorious weather.

The funniest part to me about this whole thing is how many covert and speakeasy operations are starting up in more locked down areas, from illegal underground gyms to bars that stay open way past the traditionally stated "closing time." It's getting harder to enforce, too.

While everyone is sperging about a future weird hyper-sanitized society right now, I highly, highly doubt that will be implemented beyond some minimal optics bullshit. Much like TSA, it's all security theater, and once people start to figure that out they'll say "fuck it" and go back to acting normal. Humans are creatures of habit but generally also catch onto illogical patterns, and most rational, well-adjusted humans accept daily risks without chimping out and overreacting about every little thing that could go wrong. There will always be paranoid dooms-dayers, but those people were probably anxious wrecks before the pandemic anyway. Now their screeching has become socially acceptable as opposed to mildly irritating.

I've said from the beginning the panic around COVID can't and won't last. We are already seeing that as fewer people actual bunker down and wear masks 24/7, more operations open their own covert places, etc.

We need a term for this kind of sterile, privacy-free world they want. I like the name "staphpunk" because most people will constantly have MRSA or other antibiotic resistant infections and inevitably there's an antibiotic resistance pandemic that kills everyone because we decided to drown society in hand sanitizer and never let anyone get sick and everyone had a shitty immune system.

Sure is funny how no one's bringing up antibiotic resistance or weakened immune systems in response to the constant wearing of masks or oceans of hand sanitizer being used. Even though antibiotic resistant diseases kill over a million people a year and are considered one of the likeliest ways to spawn a real pandemic that kills more than just nursing home patients and diabetic landwhales.
TBF though antibiotic medicines =/= shit like hand sanitizer, alcohol, peroxide, etc.

Usually antibiotic drugs attack at the subcellular level; or example penicillin uses whats called a beta-ring (a lasso made of proteins) to basically wrap up the bacteria and prevent them from reproducing, thereby fighting the infection. When bacteria become resistant to shit like penicillin they develop scisor-like proteins which cut the beta-ring and allow them to keep diving and spreading.

Shit like alcohol, peroxide and bleach attack at the cellular level and basically disintegrate everything in their path. Which is why, despite being like 10-100x the size of simple prokaryotes, our eukaryotic skin & tissue cells can still get damaged/burned by the above.

Now that being said some bacteria & archea are "extremophiles" meaning they love to live in shit that kills everything else, so there are some strains of bacteria that can thrive in alcohol and other pH <3.0 acids. (in the wild some archea are found on like the edge of lava pools and shit, really fascinating group)
But generally hand sanitizer wont give us drug-resistant super-bugs, doctors prescribing antibiotic meds for everything will.

This whole shaming rant makes no sense since she works at a restaurant (allegedly):

Any update on when and if the old normal is ever coming back?

(seems the news is all hot take bullshit and identity politics so I never keep up with it)
Possibly after election if Biden somehow wins, or around tax season once governors realize how bad revenue will be.

All assuming that the general public doesn't snap and burn down governor mansions over another lockdown, of course.

We're probably headed into an economic depression. Many people are already at their wit's end or last financial straw with no end in sight. Combine that with the elections....it's gonna be a mess.

Woah, I never knew that I used plates, glasses, and silverware other people used when I went to a restaurant, I thought that restaurants loved their guests so much they gave everyone new plates and dishes and forks and shit.

I want to know what restaurant this woman works at so I can never go there because I suspect she had no concept of "food sanitation" or why restaurants are required to show a health score before she became a Chinavirus doomer.

Well she appears to go to Cal-Poly and wants In N Out so she's 100% in Cali somewhere, but she just missed the money spot of the "base benefits + $600 per week" phase if she's trying to get fired for gibs. It appears Cali is having to cut costs and is going back to base benefits per week only as of July 26 on.

This is one of the dumbest fucking things I have ever heard of. Read the story and you'll wonder why the commander of the Military Sealift Command hasn't been fired. I sure do. These ships are extremely important to force projection. They can carry pre-loaded equipment and supplies to support a landing just about anywhere. They can carry far more than any aircraft, and one ship would take the place of God knows how many cargo flights.

MSC has had a problem attracting and retaining qualified CIVMARs for decades. It is a vicious cycle: people can't get off and go on vacation because there are no reliefs, and no one wants to sail with MSC because they don't want to get stuck on a ship where they can't get off because there are no reliefs.

Active-duty sailors and contractors come and go from some pierside ships each day, he said, even as the CIVMARs are forced to remain onboard.

Does this mean that the military detachment onboard that ship can go ashore but the civilians from the same vessel can't? What?!?!
