I had the pleasure of overhearing a conversation with a very loud New Yorker who was nattering on and on to my boss about how evil the administration is and how foolish everybody else is and how do you know that in Florida they act like there isn't even a pandemic and boy I'm sure glad I got back to New York before things got really bad down there they're insane and uneducated, not like New York, where we're taking things very seriously and our governor is doing such a great job--

Naturally I re-checked the figures and wouldn't you know it, New York City alone has more than triple the deaths of the entire state of Florida. New York State as a whole is almost quintuple.

Not that I know what they're telling people in New York, but I suspect the spread of information is pretty carefully controlled and if you aren't looking for information, Cuomo and de Blasio are doubtless stumping for what a great job they're doing by trying to shift goal posts and vilify the obvious targets based on incongruous comparisons (rate of infection is not comparable to rate of hospitalization and death), but it's a decent deflection tactic when most people don't bother to do their own research or ask any questions. This is what the mainstream news sources are doing, certainly.
