Growing up, we were (rightly) told not to hate people simply for being different. But it has since dawned on me that their sleight-of-hand is to extrapolate that to "thou shalt not have a problem with anyone who is different" and "having a negative opinion of someone who is different is due to you being a big fat racist meanie, and no other reason at all."
