I agree that it's due to the online footprint, but his actions up to now since the Simpspiracy kicked off have gotten me to buy into the idea that he associates with these people not for monetary gain, but in an attempt to manage any badmouthing of him that could occur online.
Think about it, at one point in that stream (allegedly, haven't listened yet) he lets slip that he does in fact want Null to curate his thread. Then there's being so friendly with Ethan, the defacto "leader" of what was left of IBS even though he had such a smaller viewership and isn't really an interesting guest. Then there's his reaction to WATP making fun of him - going and befriending Karl and bringing him into the fold.
There's other examples, but the fact that on top of his first instinct of coming across another netizen talking about him being to befriend and ensnare them in his autistic club, that he simply cannot let the existence of the criticism in this thread abide, to me, speaks to the veracity of the claim.
