Stern doesn't get a lot of credit for it but he actually has a fair amount of humility mixed in with his up front arrogance. He also doesn't chimp out when it turns out he's the object of the fun. His only concern is whether the audience is enjoying it. He quite literally lives for other people.

Dick is probably closer to what he believes is his true self, but I guess I was referring to it in the sense of any time he does a bad joke, he claims it's just a bad joke, the Dick comedian character did it - not Dax. A lot of people are finally realizing it's not a bit thankfully, but I think diehard fans excuse his tweets by rationalizing in their mind that it's a character.
