Well... he likes to get stoned. That's about it.

The old hippies that I actually know have lots of qualities that Tom lacks. They're generally very friendly people that love good food, know how to cook well and value good food enough to budget for it rather than dumpster dive.

They also love non-violent video games that involve building stuff and generally tend be intelligent enough to be great chess players even when they're high as a kite.

In other words the ones I'm familiar with actually embody the philosophy of being peaceful and sharing people. They act like the weird, eccentric grandparent/uncle that most people wish they had. They would also take one look at Tommy and say "What an asshole."

Tom is one of those mentally ill people that latches on to others but isn't really part of the group. He wears ratty clothes, gets high, begs for money, and says "namaste" (in the wrong context, no less) all the time. That makes him a hippy in his mind.

Oh... and in typical Tom fashion, he is a prolific practitioner of cultural appropriation. In this case, he appropriates the hippy cultural appropriation of the Hindu greeting of "namaste". Namaste is apparently a friendly respectful Hindu greeting. Tom uses it to say goodbye to people in a hateful manner.
