Let's pretend for one moment that he does die before the election, just for the funsies. What happens then? Will the nomination revert to option number 2, aka Bernie Sanders? Or will his running mate automatically replace him just the way Vice-President is supposted to step in after the Big Man in the White House chokes on a piece of matzo? Does he even have a running mate yet?

There isn't a playbook for this situation, they aren't technically supposed to be in this situation at all. If they admit that the primary elected someone who isn't fit for office then the whole primary process needs to be rehauled, which will anger the bernie bros even more since they have been saying it for several years now. What needs to be understood here is that they give way more of a shit about appeasing the rich people who fund the DNC than actually winning the election. The rich people rely on democrats to get legislative favortism. If they have to cede ground to a populist candidate like bernie sanders then the whole operation is fucked and the rich people will take their shekels to the republicans. They would rather run and lose on this shitty platform than have to add medicare for all to the party platform and shun all the $$$ from insurance company execs and lobbyists.

This, or they are not trying to win through conventional means. Their strategy of winning elections in the future is to build a coalition of voters who will always vote D. Similar to how they were able to lock down the black vote since the 1960s through gibs, they want to apply this strategy to all immigrants. It is why they encourage immigration legal or otherwise so heavily. (Most of the republican party is in on this as well) The democrat party wants to simply win through demographic shift.

This is a scary proposition to anyone participating in a democracy. The candidates are no longer judged off of strength as a leader, rather just what political party they run for. George Washington made a speech on this in his farewell address. This is how you get cases where a dementia riddled person is running for the most powerful elected office in the world. In my opinion, this strategy will eventually work.

The demographic shift strategy takes full effect when you have a bogeyman to run against. "Trump is evil, he wants to deport all immigrants" This is why I do not think the DNC minds losing as much this go around. Trump is the definition of evil according to many people on the left. Wait and pray for some major scandal to happen (see all their attempts at russia), then reap the benefits. Now they will have 4 more years to try and brand trump with some sort of scandal and hope it translates to a loss in 2024. By that time the demographic shift will be complete and the Republican party will have to completely abandon conservatism to stay relevant/electable nationally.

Since political spergs like Ben Shapiro showed up since the mid 2010's, people have increasingly obtained news from other alternative sources. They don't have a strangle hold on narrative anymore.

They have the balls to torch cities, kill people and make excuses for the murderers. They live in their own reality; the glorious revolution is happening and any day now, once they've burned enough dumpsters, the government will fall and they can take charge to create a new perfect society.

If the Democrats tell them "enough is enough, sit down and shut up with the intersectional justice stuff, we need your help to win elections" they'll be forced to break away. The party they create wouldn't be a big party nor capable of winning national elections. There are already local parties like Socialist Alternative in Seattle which Kshama Sawant belongs to. I could see them building a nationwide party incorporating smaller parties like that that can install a few city council members and state reps here and there in deep blue districts. Maybe take a couple House seats .
