The US Dollar is backed by Oil. Every Oil producing country has agreed to trade Oil only in US Dollars. It's why it's called the Petrodollar. Libya and Iraq has shown, if you try to go against the US, and allow yourself to trade Oil with other currencies, the US will fuck you up(I'd say thats more tied to the people that run the money system that the US specifically though). I don't think you quite understand what "fiat" means. Only conspiracy weirdos who can't wrap their brains around using currency only as a medium of exchange, not as a holder of value, buy into the petrodollar nonsense. Fiat dollars are "backed" by the fairly good track record of the US government paying off t-bills, not letting the money printer get too out of hand, and having a large and wealthy tax base. That's it. The US dollar isn't a holder of value for stuffing under the mattress or burying in mason jars like the old silver certificates. You use it to buy stuff. You trade it for the things that you can stuff under the mattress and put in the mason jars. Or, like a normal person, wisely invest in property stocks or loans. Or oil, I guess.

Some places (like DC and Manhattan) have had this system in place long before now. If you want to get your shit delivered in some places, you gotta grease the palms of the locals. Whether officially through special trip/parking permits or by hiring some approved subcontractor.

Where it gets tricky is places like St. Louis where the cross-continent superslab runs right through the middle of the city. They haven't been able to fully corrupt that yet. Though by fucking around with fuel taxes, registrations, permits, and tollways, they are trying.

They have a million different ways to skim a bit off the top of a productive business to disperse to their friends. This shouldn't be a surprise anyone.

I have no doubt that they will find a way graft the system. Passing the costs off to customers already hit by COVID and living in the city is probably already more expensive.
