The term Mary Sue gets thrown around, and its apt, but I prefer to use "Superman + Tits - Kryptonite"
All the complaints I've heard about Superman over the years are absolutely present in a lot of these empowered female characters, but without any kind of weaknesses or enemies above the character (Aside from Kryptonite, Superman also has Darkseid, Brainiac, Bizzaro, Parasite, Doomsday and many others that can match him physically).
When you take away weaknesses and obstacles from the hero, then drama and tension just get sucked out of it. The climax to Captain Marvel might be the worst I've ever seen where she just becomes invincible god lady and nobody on the bad guy side comes anywhere close to being a match for her, so the whole thing is just a boring special effects 'splosion with no tension.
Damn, maybe that's it, maybe Disney's Chinese overlords don't want to give the peasants any ideas about a commie revolt. You know, the shittiest part of making *this* Mulan not have to work for anything and just being the best because of magic or whatever, is that the original Mulan wasn't that way at all.
Almost everybody loves this song, even to this day. It isn't just a great song, it's also a great training montage. This Mulan wasn't just somehow magically awesome, she had to work her ass off. The song itself even shat on her- "You're unsuited for the rage of war, so pack up go home you're through. How could I make a man out of you?"
The fact that Mulan persevered through all of that, and does actually end up becoming legitimately awesome by the end of the song (and so do the rest of her platoon for that matter. The original film saw no reason to make them all suck just to make her look better.) is really pretty damn inspirational. I'm not even a little girl, and have obviously never been one, and even I found myself being inspired watching that clip again, just from one song.... And Disney saw fit to cut all of that out of this one, because Xinnie the Poo wouldn't like it or whatever.
I hope this film fails spectacularly.
Are you implying that the ruler of China doesn’t have the super powers thanks to the Mandate of Heaven? Why, that would be preposterous! Of course the glorious leader of China can do whatever he chooses to.Mulan's entire story is meaningless because the emperor is so bad ass he can catch arrows barehanded?
I mean if he does then why does Mulan need to save him?Are you implying that the ruler of China doesn’t have the super powers thanks to the Mandate of Heaven?
The thing is too, the Nazi imagery is meant for parallel. Scar is very charismatic and is great at seducing people into following him, much like Hitler. He was trying to turn the Pride Lands into a dictatorship after all. And above all else, Scar himself looks like foreign, weak, and with very female moves. That makes no sense lol it's not like they're glorifying scar. He's the villain. Or are they saying they don't want to hurt nazi feelings by villainizing them?
Lol should never have bowed to China and accomodated a 'historically accurate' mulan to fit the chinese audience. Get woke go broke
That's one of the things that really pisses me off about these remakes, that the directors seem to approach them as though they're fucking Marvel movies.
Brad and his wife were disappointed even though Laura didn't mind it due to a low-bar expectation (Brad doesn't remember much of the animated movie to begin with, this was more of his wife's review as a bigger fan of the original movie). She described it as Mulan in a Marvel movie.
EDIT: Brad says he'd rather rewatch the live-action Aladdin than Mulan if given a choice.
May the gods smile upon the Celestial Emperor Xinnie the Pooh!
This doesn't look real, it looks like a cutscene from a video game based on a movie.
Kind of reminds me of a 2000’s music video but with less special effects and more out of context samurai fighting
Oh look, Mulan was a super magic badass as a child too. Awesome.
The fuck is this movie?!
I saw that post, the guy was mocking someone who made the same tweet about a similar scene in GoT.
Oh for sure. The movie looks like it was made in China. Which makes sense, given who they’re marketing this film towards.Am not aware of what happened in GoT, but think point still stands a shot like that exists in a big-budget Disney movie.
Even Twilight did this.I saw that post, the guy was mocking someone who made the same tweet about a similar scene in GoT.
