I would have to pull the exact number, but it was something like 1200 total police killings on average and about 100,000 police officers in the US. So yes, way less than 7%! Also, covid is less than 7% deadly, so mostly safe and no big deal I guess then.

I just wish there was some comeuppance for all those DA clearly not doing their jobs in going after criminals just because said criminals align with them politically. They're just letting dangerous nuts back into the streets. I'm unsure of how the DA position works but is it likely they might lose their position after all this with some intervention by someone higher on the totem poll?

When it comes to the right fighting back I always lean more towards scenario b, that doesn't mean I can't understand why it's starting to boil over. Everyone has their breaking point where they say "fuck it, enough is enough" and this tolerance is different for everyone. Honestly, I think there's been amazing tolerance levels shown by the right so far after several months on riots and I can understand people are running out of patience. Emotions are running high after the last several days/weeks of escalation and the rather limp response by authorities towards actually punishing rioters has probably pushed people into wanting to do something themselves.

Hope the family of the dead inmate sues the county, some one suspect of attempting to murder some one becuase they were white, was given a white cell mate... that doesn't sound like a good idea.

Inmates are wards of the state and the state must do what it can to protect inmates from harm. If the rolls were reveresed there would rightly be outrage ("I murder people because they are black" guy gets black cellmate what do you think is going to happen).

FFS my county has been sued multiple times for inmates committing suicide.

Seattle PD's strategy has been impressive I have to say. Bike cops as forward blockers for side streets and freeway entrances or movers from the rear, with the riot line behind providing the threat of immediate arrest/gassing if the protesters linger.

It's like a forced march and they can still express their 1st amendment rights during but nobody has enough time to actually start anything bad due to the constant pushing from the cops.

Lol this brought back memories. I went into college in the late 80s and I actually wrote something of a similar themed essay for my entrance exam to college. We had to write a essay about ourselves or some shit. I was born and grew up in NYC and lived close to a neighborhood called Howard Beach, which is all Italian. At the time there was this huge racial incident where some black kids stopped off in Howard Beach to get pizza and were a bit rowdy and some Italian kids chased them through the neighborhood until they ran on the highway and one got killed by a car on the highway. You can google it - it was huge at the time and there's still shit being written about it and the neighborhood is still associated with it. It blew open this whole discussion on race and all that shit and was big news for a long time.

Anyway I grew up close to Howard Beach in Brooklyn and for my entrance exam essay I wrote this essay about how I sympathize with the kids in Howard Beach and how I grew up in an Italian only neighborhood and how we don't like black people because they're lazy and start trouble. It was all about how I might be a racist but I can't help it because I'm just a product of my environment and I have no control on if I turned out racist or not.

It was the late 80s so it was still pretty chill. Surprisingly the college didn't really freak out - they just rejected my essay and told me it was unacceptable and to write a new one, so I wrote some boring shit about how I love music and I'm going to be a musician. You know, the tripe they wanted to hear, and they accepted me into the college.

I haven't thought about that for ages but your post just reminded me of it. I'm kind of laughing at how nuts it was to write that essay but that's through the lens of today - I think back then I didn't think it was a big deal because it was such a chill time. I don't remember thinking my essay was out of order or that I'd suffer any repercussions about it - I mean, the race thing was huge at the time because of the incident so everyone was talking about race and people hadn't reached the point of today where they've lost their fucking minds.

But if I had written that essay today? They probably would have shown up at my house and deported me to Russia to work in salt mines or something.
