They actually do work well. They block stream-style pepper spray and aerosolized mace, if you get the umbrella up in time. Back before CHAZ, the police were using that more often and the umbrellas neutralized that tactic, so they were forced to switch to tear gas grenades and rubber bullets. (Which caused the protesters to scream about brutality and sue, etc)

They can actually bounce back the hand-thrown tear gas canisters, when they're lobbed from afar. The 26mm and 40mm fired rounds tend to bust the umbrella, though.

Like @Salubrious said, they're also useful to block vision of crimes. When Antifa is running coordinated havoc squads, you'll see 1 person smash a window with 2 umbrella holding people covering him from street/camera view. They'll also use umbrellas at the front of the protest so police can't see what's going on in the middle, and to block the cameras of reporters who they don't like or don't trust.

At this point I think every umbrella phalanx should be met with a hail of rubber bullets, because those go right through them.

Oh good. The Public safety building is literally right next to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office and the Monroe County Jail. The police can literally walk some of these rioters right to their cells.



The umbrellas are less for protection (although some idiots might think so) and more for literally covering up crimes in progress. I've seen some rioters huddle together and open their umbrellas to surround someone doing something nefarious.

It was mentioned last night that part of the arrest strategy the protesters are calling "targeted arrests" involves the cameras so my guess is that PPB are streaming privately and someone is keeping track of footage and using it to point out to the boots on the ground who to pick up, because the arrests are happening quite some minutes after the crimes they are being arrested for were committed.

From OPSEC/PERSEC it makes sense for PPB to not live stream it, if Antifa can get a better view behind the police line, it might show signs of weakness in the police wall and/or broadcast signs of an advancement sooner then needed.
