That would also make the Republicans hypocrites since they were the ones REEEEEEEEEEEEing about not nominating a pick in an election year
If the Democrats cared more about winning than about decorum and "looking like the adults in the room", they might not be as comically ineffective party as they are. This is politics; the Dems don't just not want to talk about how the sausage is made, they don't even want to make sausage to begin with.
Kicking the can down the road was a winning move for the GOP in 2016. Filling the seat immediately will be a winning move now. Stomping their feet and shouting "NOT FAIR!" is all the Dems will do. And y'know what? It ISN'T fair -- it is literal hypocrisy --, but y'know what else? The GOP got to confirm two extra life appointees than they perhaps would have if the Dems had even a rudimentary spine. The GOP may be hypocrites, but they don't care: they want to pass their agenda and use the courts to dismantle the Dems agenda and they are succeeding to an unbelievable degree.
I hope Trump pushes through some 40 year old self-proclaimed nationalist with a fashy undercut who will be on the court for the next 50 years for maximum shitlib meltdown potential.
Yeah, who cares about fucking up the country, as long as we can stick it to those libs, right?
They don't think it's fucking the country up, tho. You are doing that liberal thing where you think that, in the core of their being, conservatives have the same worldview liberals do, but are just being contrarian for no reason (or for profit or for *insert cynical reason here*) -- it's like the fundie thing where they say "Oh, atheists really do believe in god. They just say they don't so they can sin". That's not the case. The GOP is absolutely, earnestly convinced of their own worldview and the dire, pressing need to enact the agenda they based around it to the point that they're willing to do "scummy", "hypocritical" things to advance it.
Imagine if your family was starving and literally your only option was to let them starve or go rob a bank to get money to buy food. The Dems would be the ones saying "well, it's very unfortunate, but we need to respect the rules even if sometimes that means bad things happen to good people. I wish we could get food, but there's no realistic way to do it. I'm so sorry". The GOP would mask up, knock over the bank, feed their family and then deal with the consequences later.
To the Dems, the means justify the ends. To the GOP, the ends justify the means. The latter is the exponentially more effective mindset for governing.
