The US and Ireland have a weird obsession with the subject of abortion. In the rest of the Western world, it's simply a non-issue. Personally, I blame the fixation on the level of influence religious fanatics still wield in both countries.
In the case of the US it’s because of fanatics on both sides. Especially the left.
Europe has far more stricter abortion laws than the US.
In Europe, with a few exceptions, a compromise on abortion was reached long ago: Pretty much free abortion in the first trimester, some allowances for abortion up to the 5-th-6th trimester, and no abortion after the 2nd trimester, since that’s when a fetus is virtually indistinguishable from a baby except for size.
That’s a fair solution to a problem where there are no good solutions.
In the US however, fanatics on the left demand as little regulation as possible and legal abortions even in the third trimester.
(For the longest time there were few limits to abortions in the US, where even late term abortions were made.)
It’s hard to come up with a compromise when both sides are unreasonable, so the battle continues.
