Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

I've gone back and read the first few months of this thread and it's mind boggling how much information was posted on here before the majority of people and especially the media even acknowledged it.

This thread was actually instrumental in helping me make some tough last-minute decisions when shit was going down in mid-March. Not only that but it was my life force when we were banned from doing fucking anything for the next couple of weeks.

People who came together to watch a re,tard shove Crayola Model Magic up his anus proved to be more intellectually and psychologically nourishing than the multibillion dollar worldwide news industry. God bless this fucking shithole forum.

Went to a small local business today to pick up an item I needed. Known the guy who runs it for years, very casually. He had a big Wear A Face Covering Please notice in the window so I complied. Got my item, he rings it up for me and asks how I'm finding the current SITUATION. I say 'boring', and we spend the next 15 minutes having quite the conversation about things. We don't agree on everything, but he's as concerned with loss of freedoms and economic carnage as anyone here. During our conversation I end up being annoyed with the mask getting in the way of me talking and he says "Oh, take the bloody thing off!" So I do. I was the only customer in there anyway. It was one of those little moments where you realise you are on the same page to some degree and can drop the pantomime. Relief!

It's quite interesting how much skepticism there is around at this point. Had a few conversations with people recently where they probe a little to see if you're receptive and then unload a ton of exasperation and skepticism with the ongoing bullshit regulation coming from government. There's a certain paranoia behind it all too - not unfounded - of somehow being ratted out if one has the wrong opinions. I instinctively put the mask on when another customer finallly walked in and we quickly wound up our conversation. What a time to be alive.

Someone yelled at my wife for going the wrong way down a grocery store aisle. Like if you told me that would happen a few years ago its pretty wtf.

I hope your wife told them to fuck off. Those one-way aisles are one of the dumbest things to come out of all of this. What's even the point of them? That, and blocking off all but one entrance/exit to the stores, actually makes the crowding WORSE! It's so stupid.

My city has a mask mandate. I walked into a Waffle House without a mask (genuinely forget it, I keep it my car but I rode with a friend). They didn't say a damn thing. Afterwards my friend was (jokingly) busting my chops about it in front of the waitress who said, more or less, "We honestly don't give a shit. We can ask you to leave, but we won't."

Sanity may yet prevail.

Anyone care to share their most absurd covid situation/moment you’ve been through? Mine was having to attend a deposition with masks on all the lawyers and court reporter and the despondent having to repeat themselves multiple times and being interrupted by the court reporter because they couldn’t understand them. Very smart on their part wanting to do in person instead of zoom, it really broke up the defense counsels questions and stopped them from getting any momentum.
On a couple of occasions since it became required to wear masks here, I've forgotten to grab a mask on my way out the door. Both times, I simply used an old hand towel I keep in my car and used that as a temporary face covering with the help of a baseball cap and two large paper clips to keep it held in place. My auto shop accepted that as a valid face covering as the current state FAQ for face coverings states "any cloth that fully covers the nose and mouth" is acceptable, but that's not the story I'll be sharing here.

The second time I forgot my mask, I used the same makeshift arrangement for a recent doctor's appointment. Despite my satisfying the state's requirements, the front desk clerk took one look at me upon my checking in and said, "You can't wear that! Let me get you a mask." All I could do was shrug when the traditional mask she gave me ended up fitting me much looser than my own makeshift covering 🤷‍♂️ . Now, I keep a spare mask in my car so I always have one available.

"We honestly don't give a shit. We can ask you to leave, but we won't."

Sanity may yet prevail.
I do something similar at the office. Because I wear my mask any time someone comes to the office, I'm willing to let established/regular clients in without a mask so long as they confirm they have none of COVID's signs and symptoms. Unfamiliar individuals, however, are out of luck if they come without a mask and won't agree to reasonable alternative accommodations. Luckily COVID has led most people to call the office first if they want an in-person meeting; the only people that have shown up unsolicited since June have been door-to-door salespeople.

I just love the way Freedom of Religion got trampled on throughout this farce (and I suppose Freedom of Assembly too, if you're not part of BLM or ANTIFA)
California isn't exactly known for its love of the constitution or individual rights. This is a state that recently downgraded the intentional spreading of AIDS from a felony to a misdemeanor and is currently contemplating a law that would potentially make it easier for an older male to prey on underage girls. Liberals aren't too keen on conservative religious beliefs, either, so none of this is surprising even if it's wrong.

Hand in hand with what you said, it's always :story: to see Democrats bouncing and squeaking about Republican anti-shutdown protestors not always wearing mask when they themselves conveniently ignore the ongoing BLM riots protests where a fair number of people neither wear masks nor social distance.

Although, I have to wonder if Pelosi "followed science" when she went to that salon. Rules for us, but not for her.
Pelosi seems to be one of many politicians with the mindset that it's totally acceptable to do anything they want in public because they make laws for a living and that (erroneously) means they can do anything they want without impunity.

This year has at least been beneficial in identifying which of my friends and family are easily manipulated by the media and libs. And it has really opened my eyes to just how truly evil the media and libs are.
Tell me about it. I've pretty much given up saying anything offline about politics or current events unless I have to because I'm surrounded by enough people who have the combination of:
  • An extremely salty version of TDS,
  • Endless stanning for our Democratic governor's passive-aggressive COVID-19 executive orders and enforcement mechanisms, and
  • The belief that Kyle Rittenhouse is a White Supremacist who shot three people out of hate.
It's sad and word-defying to see people who once knew how to think critically in the past suddenly decide that anything the media says now is infallible gospel truth. *sigh*

The most annoying part of this is how you're now being shamed by low information individuals who didn't know china pox was a thing until the media started talking about it.

This thread was created in late January, at that time people were already fearmongering about the virus for a few weeks on the internet. I remember being on the subway in early February and being concerned with people sneezing and coughing. It wasn't until late march that lockdowns began. By that time I had already gone through my personal concern and stopped being worried, but instead you get this circus of people panicking because the media tells them to be afraid.

We're in september now, soon october, and you now got people shaming you for not wearing a mask on the subway.
You fucking moron!
The time to be worried and wearing a mask was over half a year ago, all the people actually in danger have already died or bunkered down. Stop being the stasi and realize you spent half the pandemic in blissful ignorance breathing all over the rest of us.
The most ridiculous thing I'm seeing is boomers and women wearing those stupid face visors as a substitute for masks. The face visors are essentially a sneeze guard, they're designed as a substitute for goggles not fucking masks. Covid-19 is a 78 nano meter particle, so having a piece of plastic 6 inches from your face does jack shit. Great clown world moment is seeing a Karen with a visor berating someone for not wearing a mask.

Anyway best option would be a P-100 respirator. What the Chinks use in the Covid wards (zero cross infections). That is if you buy that it's mainly droplet spread like flu. But given it's highly transmissible in humid climate zones this does not seem to be the case (we'd have to suspend the laws of physics). Many scientists believe it's mainly being spread through fecal transmission, i.e. folks not washing their hands. Which is why it's so prevalent in nursing homes where most of the residents are incontinent and in certain ethnic groups. If that's the case any kind of mask is a total waste of time and explains why mask mandates do fuck all to bring down infection rates.

Oh no the more annoying part is the middle info dumbasses.

The one that knows that an N95 mask is only 22% effective in blocking out coronachan particles.
BUT THEN APPARENTLY doesn't know that if the best mask they can get is only 22% effective, then it's a fucking retarded notion to be smug about it.

Especially while smugly chuckling with your cloth mask, so the top part falls off and your nose gets exposed.

Reminds me, does anyone have sources for actual published research showing the effectiveness/ineffectiveness of the various mask types? It's difficult to track down any study that includes the stupid cargo-cult bandanna face coverings and I'm getting really sick of the sheer aura of smug virtue signaling I've seen over them being MANDATORY AND IMPORTANT(tm).

I've attended my state fair for the last 16 years. I take two days off work every year so I can spend time and not be rushed. I've made friends with a large number of the people that come to compete and show their livestock, the people who come to sell their homemade wares, as well as the volunteers who freely give their time to keep things running. It brings me genuine joy to see those people, catch up, and have fellowship with them. Knowing that there won't be a fair this year is really disappointing. I especially feel bad for all of the kids that won't get to enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells that bring them excitement, joy, and wonder. Can we please get back to normal ASAP, and not this "new normal" bullshit, please?
I'm so upset that even our little town fair got cancelled here. It's one of my favorite parts of the year and I always submit a bunch of entries and get to buy and trade local stuff.

It's not like it's a huge packed fair anyway, I don't see how a little town fair outdoors is any more dangerous than a packed grocery store. The mall is allowed to open but God forbid anyone go in a corn maze or stop at Aunt Marie's jam stand. It's like they want to demoralize everyone.

All of the people I know who are now militant COVID warriors were the ones making fun of COVID and the people worried about it or prepping for it in the beginning and calling masks stupid and saying they'd never wear one in a million years, but they'd never own up to it. They'd just say "Well we just didn't know enough, now I'm listening to the science!" No, we knew plenty. I've gone back and read the first few months of this thread and it's mind boggling how much information was posted on here before the majority of people and especially the media even acknowledged it.

This is my experience as well. The ones who are freaking out the most about it now were the ones early on posting stupid infographics about how it was less dangerous than the flu and accusing those who were concerned about it of being "anti science" because "the science" says it's nothing to worry about you dummy.

People are such fucking sheep, they will never admit how easily swayed they are by the news and social media and that they haven't dug in any deeper than that. When dismissing it was the "I am so smart" position they were all over it. They don't care about digging for the truth of any given subject, they care about having the "right opinion", whether it's backed by facts or not.

The most annoying to me is people who are saying Trump should have caused a bigger panic when a few months ago they accused anyone who was panicking of being a "doomsday prepper" or a "hoarder". People have the memories of goldfish.

While it's not true for all fairs and local outdoor celebrations, I can't help wondering why small-town fairs held in large open areas can't still operate with reduced capacity under social distancing. They could easily hold two sessions: a morning/mid-day one and an afternoon/early evening one to have as many people as possible partake under social distancing and capacity limitations. But since that makes too much sense, governmental agencies would never allow it. Unfortunate since some of these small towns use these festivals as fundraisers for either charity or needed items that cost more than their budgets will ever allow.

This reminds me of another COVID-related frustration: All kinds of people and groups -- especially city chambers of commerce -- normally encourage people to support small businesses. However, COVID-related restrictions -- especially those enacted on a local level -- have restricted these same small businesses so much that they'll be lucky to break even financially this year let alone make any sort of profit. In the meantime, many have closed up shop indefinitely or closed permanently due to the lack of a timetable for returning to full operations.

The school system in this part of Florida went to a semester block schedule, so the kids have four 90 minute classes a day, and will complete the classes in a semester, like college. It is awesome.
The school district in the city adjacent to mine has done block scheduling for years and it's been popular for reasons similar to yours. Additionally, the high school's block schedule setup also allows juniors and seniors to replace one of their final-hour course periods with an elective offered at a nearby regional campus that offers specialized electives not offered by participating schools due to numbers/logistics issues.

In the past week so, there was a newspaper article discussing the possibility of schools using online learning as a way to address "snow days" or other unexpected cancellations that prevent in-class learning. Administrators like this because it would keep them from using up their yearly allotment of cancelled days and having to add make-up time into the last part of the school year. Teachers are ambivalent since their unions aren't too keen on any sort of drastic change. Parents and students are less than enthusiastic at the idea of having to actually do classwork on days the latter group would normally get unexpected breaks. I think it could be a good idea where there are a lot of weather-related days off from school so long as any kinks or shortcomings in online learning that have popped up this year are dealt with adequately.

I remember being told people who are concerned about Covid-19 transmission through the mail are racists. And nowadays they tell me they wipe down or disinfect every single thing that comes through the mail. Fuck, I remember when wearing a mask was racist towards Chinese people. The most insane part of all this is which country is percieved to be to blame and what the race of the people there is is definitely a factor in how the news and social media has treated the disease.
