I was browsing Slate, and came across yet another article by Mark Joseph Stern about the great circumcision controversy. Some poor toddler keeps pissing on his own leg because his foreskin is too tight, so naturally, the kids pediatrician and urologist recommend circumcision. This led to the toddler's ex wife freaking kidnapping the kid, hiding in a domestic violence shelter while evading the police, and filing a federal lawsuit at her ex.* The whole thing ended with her weeping in court while signing a consent form so her son can take a proper piss.

This isn't even the smegma of the foreskin tip of the iceberg. It turns out there's a whole fringe group of people who think circumcision is tantamount to foot-binding or FGM.* * It wasn't even the first time Stern wrote an article about this drama. There's batshit crazy websites, embarrassing statements from celebrities, hilarious webcomics, and all other sorts of silly shit.

Circumcision is stupid

I can see why it could be done for medical reasons but it's a silly procedure of a more barbaric time period of human history. I don't believe it should be done to children without their consent when they don't even know why it happens.

I came across some of these guys and websites online before. I can see good arguments against circumcision on infants and I am against it myself but some of these people try to present it as if it is something really important when it isn't. The comparisons between circumcision and traditional female genital mutilation happening in certain countries are really ridiculous.

Vaccines aren't done for religious/cosmetic reasons

There's a huge difference between doing a medical procedure that involves circumcision and the reason why the majority of people in the US do them. While you can cherry pick a story about someone who needed a circumcision for a medical reason, there have also been botched circumcisions that lead to death.

There are also negatives associated with circumcision like loss of feeling in the penis. There have also been reports you're 5 times more likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction. At no time in its 75 years has the American Academy of Pediatrics ever recommended infant circumcision. Compare this with the vast majority of doctors who recommend vaccinations.

That's dumb. Your vaccines might not be a medical "emergency," but they are a high priority for your health and the health of those around you. It's imperative that people get themselves and their children vaccinated.

Circumcision is most often done for cosmetic or religious reasons. A person could easily chose to have it done as an adult, so there's no reason to do so before they can make that choice. In this particular case it sounds like the boy's problem could be a symptom of future problems for which circumcision is the best treatment, so good on the courts for getting him clipped.
