Turns out one of the artists, maumeart, is working on a region of his own: the Kyanos region.
Based off of Greece, this region's starters are the fire bull, Calfyre, the water cat Bublynx, and the grass toad Politad... Which totally doesn't read like something from the Poliwag line.

Damn, a Pokemon based on a on a torture and execution device is kind of awesome, even if the design itself is ugly. I wonder what are the other 2 based on?

Pipefrog is based off the Pied Piper of Hamelin, you can tell because of the getup (which is very reminiscent of the Disney incarnations of the character). The Bublynx line, by name alone, could be assumed that is based of the lynx species, but I would not be able to tell what is the inspiration behind Nekween's design.
I like the Politad line, too bad it's pure grass, I feel like it could benefit of a second typing.

That seems like attempt to go around "3rd stage first" problem, exacerbated by laziness.
Made pretty obvious by how little these two have with 3rd stage.
