This is gonna get me more than a few stickers, but the poor bastard got broken by his presidency. He isn't just painting like a man possessed. He's painting all 3k+ service members that died under him because that's the only thing he feels he can do to atone for his over-eagerness to be a big name like Daddy. Honestly, I think he expected 9/11 as much as anyone else, and just wanted the same End of History the 90's were. But it happens, the US gets angry, the glowies have some very convincing evidence for both Afghanistan and Iraq, and frankly, his daddy issues from being a president's son push him into being over eager. He would have been a great peacetime president, but as a war one he was just... weak and pushed around too much by certain advisors. Not saying he didn't fuck up or that the buck doesn't stop in the Oval Office but... wrong man for the job, and he knows it now.

Announce a Supreme Court nomination, take a shitload of question about it, fly to Pennsylvania for a rally and doesn't even get home until 10 at night. Going back to the debate sperging, I think that would actually be a bridge too far for the media. They like to think of themselves as something between kingmaker and crooked sports referee. They may constantly try making calls to favor the Democrats, but the Democrats need to give them something to work with. You can't make calls favoring the blue team if the quarterback won't leave the fucking locker room. I might be imagining it, but there seems to be a subtle disdain in the media forming towards the left because they're having to carry everything for them. Maybe they were spoiled by Obama's and Bill Clinton's charisma, but even Hillary had the woman card and would go outside. Biden produces maybe 10 semi-useable minutes of film a week, and is avoiding the public harder than a celebrity in a sex scandal. At least Charlie Sheen's tiger blood and Saddam hookers were fun.
Not to mention the debates are just as big for the media as for the politicians. They're important because they justify the media's position and self-importance, not to mention the audience draw. If they lose the right to host these debates, they'll be relegated to less politically relevant than twitter anime avatars, and they know it. They'll turn and attack their dem conspirators with a vengeance not even the Republicans see, if only to buy themselves more time as Clark Kent instead of blogger with daddy issues #312. And I bet you could recoup some ratings from missed debates by doing an exposé on Pelosi's various dealing.
