One of my acquaintances is a woman in her late 20s/early 30s who's been obese her entire life and while her blood tests are currently fine, she's starting to feel the first consequences (feeling disproportionally out of breath with physical activity, joint pain, overall sluggishness) so she's now taking daily walks to improve her fitness level.
However, since she announced she's intentionally trying to lose weight on SM, fat activists and thin handmaidens have come out of the woodwork to tell her she's wrong, that she shouldn't "hate" her body, that her issues have nothing to do with her being obese, one thin idiot even told her that "oh, you aren't getting winded because you're fat, I'm thin and my nose is always congested so I can't breathe properly during physical exercise either" and this kind of bullshit.
I reached out to her to warn about HAES discourse and to send some words of support, and thank goodness she appreciated it and has a good head on her shoulders. Her decision is very well grounded in science and she is determined to not let politics influence her health journey, but it was upsetting for her to see that so many people are willing to ignore her own experience as an obese person in the name of fat activism, and that so many prefer to see her become increasingly unhealthy than to look like they're fatphobic on SM.
