Science Half a million sharks may be killed in effort to make Covid vaccine, wildlife experts say

Around half a million sharks may be slaughtered in an effort to make a Covid-19 vaccine, wildlife experts have claimed.

The top predators are harvested for squalene, a natural oil made in the liver of sharks, which is used medicine - including in current flu jabs.

The ingredient is used as an adjuvant to increase the effectiveness of a vaccine by creating a stronger immune response.

It is used in some of the candidates for a Covid-19 vaccine.

If one of those vaccines is used world-wide, conservationist group Shark Allies believe around 250,000 sharks will need to be slaughtered to provide one dose for each person.

However some scientists believe two doses may be needed to immunise the population, meaning around 500,000 sharks would need to be slaughtered, according to the California-based group's calculations.

Stefanie Brendl, founder and executive director of Shark Allies, said: 'Harvesting something from a wild animal is never going to be sustainable, especially if it's a top predator that doesn't reproduce in huge numbers.

'There's so many unknowns of how big and how long this pandemic might go on, and then how many versions of it we have to go through, that if we continue using sharks, the numbers of sharks taken for this product could be really high, year after year after year.'

In a Facebook post, she added: 'We are not trying to slow down or hinder the production of a vaccine.

'We simply ask that testing of non-animal derived squalene is conducted alongside shark squalene so it can be replaced as soon as possible.

'At billions of doses needed per year, for decades to come, it is critical that we don't rely on a wild animal resource. It can be detrimental to shark species that are hunted for their oil, and it is not a reliable supply chain.'

The group has set up an online petition named 'Stop Using Sharks in COVID-19 Vaccine - Use EXISTING Sustainable Options'.

In the Change.or petition, which has attracted almost 9,500 signatures of its 10,000 target, the group says there are 'better alternatives' to using squalene in vaccines.

The group say squalene made from shark liver oil is used most commonly because it is 'cheap to obtain' and 'easy to come by'.

But they say the chemical structure of the squalene compound is identical in sharks and non-animal alternatives, meaning its effectiveness in vaccines should be identical regardless of its source.

All plants and animals produce squalene as a biochemical intermediate, and it can be produced from non-animal based sources including yeast, sugarcane and olive oil.

Shark Allies say one company, Amyris, one of the producers of squalene, based in California's Silicon Valley, uses a process that derives squalene from sugarcane.

In their most recent statement, the company claims it can produce squalene for one billion vaccines in one month or less.

The company's synthetic squalene is not yet approved for use in vaccines.

However, its Chief Executive, John Melo, said he is in discussions with regulators in the US to allow it to be used as an alternative adjuvant in vaccines currently formulated to use shark-based squalene.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) there are 40 candidate vaccines for Covid-19 in clinical evaluation and 142 vaccines in preclinical evaluation.

Shark Allies say that, of these vaccines, 17 use adjuvants, and five of those adjuvants are shark-squalene based.

The group has also raised concerns over the areas in where sharks are slaughtered comes and say it often comes from countries that are 'poorly regulated in terms of fisheries and fish oil production'.

Squalene is often sourced from small private fishing operations in the Pacific Ocean from countries such as Indonesia and the Philippines, and processed in China.

They warn an increase in demand could increase pressure on populations of sharks in those countries, as well as in Europe and the US, while raising concerns over the already vulnerably gulper shark - which is rich in squalene.

According to estimates made by conservationists, around three million sharks are killed every year for squalene, which is also used in cosmetics and machine oil.

Around 3,000 sharks are needed to extract one tonne of squalene.

Sounds to me like they are trying to use this as an excuse to push through an unvetted source of squalene. Sure, let's take an experimental vaccine and add another layer of uncertainty to it. That makes sense.

Also, I don't really care about sharks. My dad took me to see Jaws when it came out. I was 5. I've been terrified of them ever since. So, I'm not really worried about wiping out the shark population. I mean, I know species extinction is a bad thing -- but they are nightmare fuel for me, so I would kind of like a world without sharks.

Oh boo hoo, human lives mean more then sharks

Yeah I mean...you guys eat fish and meat. Its not like this is a vegan forum.

In addition to non-shark based sources, it can be harvested from basically any kind of shark. Its not like you have to hunt the rare ones to extinction, and you only need the liver so you can just kinda do whatever with the rest. You could potentially just make it with the Spiny Dogfish already harvested for food, for example (13,800 tonnes harvest a year at around 8 pounds a shark = 3,802,974 sharks).

Really? Nobody's figured out how to synthesize this or at least have made a farm to kill sharks for this valuable use?

Edit: Anyway, what's the estimate based on? Great whites or tiny sand sharks?

Once again, people continue to overreact to a disease that has a lower infection and mortality rate than your average flu season. We already have decent amounts of evidence that Hydroxychloroquine can treat the coof, but people really don't seem to want to use that out of seemingly no other reason than to spite orange man.

mmm.. sharkilicious

There's many species of smaller sharks, the kind that you wouldn't even think of as sharks by looking at them. Fuck sharks, it's not like hammerheads and great whites are on extinction watch, and even if they were, would we really miss them? The aquarium-sized lesser sharks will be farmed, big fucking deal.

The retarded looking gulpers in question:

it's almost like we need to cut the bullshit and let nature take its course. I love my grandparents and all, but...
Also show of hands, how many of these "shark allies" will defend chinese shark fin soup for the sake of "culture", where they literally just chop the fins off the poor (still alive) animal then chuck it back in the ocean to die? Sharks are important, but their design is inherently flawed, apparently when the eggs hatch inside the mother, she can only sustain one offspring, and with them being predators one offspring will cannibalize the other.

If they're this bent out of shape about sharks, it makes me wonder why they don't praise the oil and petrochemical industry for making stuff that doesn't involve mass-hunting animals. Whaling didn't go away because of a bunch of people bitching about it, it died because of it was made obsolete by petroleum by-products, which were cheaper and safer to produce.

You know, I hear the reason sharks don't actually eat humans is because we taste like garbage because there's nowhere near enough fat on us compared to aquatic mammals. When it comes to troons and SJW's.... I think we need to run a scientific experiment. Yes, lives will sadly be lost in the name of science, but I think its a sacrifice we are all willing for them to make.
You don't know how much soul a shark eats off of a person...you really want them to suffer an even worse taste than what the body provides?

You’ve gotta make up your minds. If you want to stay alive, then ante up. If you want to play it cheap, be on welfare the whole winter. I don’t want no volunteers, I don’t want no mates, there’s too many captains on this island. Ten thousand dollars for me by myself. For that you get the head, the tail, the whole damn thing.

Most sharks a fn assholes and the ones who aren't won't be missed. Lol. I've almost had my arm taking off by a Great White hand lining off George's Bank. Had a 45 foot Basking shark chill in our wake for a good few hours steam from "The Bank" till the 200 mile line. He was cool af. Whale sharks were a little to big for my liking and made me a bit on easy knowing the big fucker could just up and decide he didn't want us around anymore. We (the crew) would swim a bit on the really hot summer days and used to grab "blue dogs" by the tail fin and go for quick rip. We always knew it was time to get back aboard when the Blue Sharks cleared out. Mako sharks would always clear them out eventually. Makos are hardly mentioned, compared to bull, tiger and whites, when talking about attacking humans but man no one stuck around to test them either. Very aggressive. Never had experience with a bull or tiger shark. Great Whites were very rare and came up usually from "De Cape" following a warm gulf stream. Encountered three "Big Whites" as a youth/young adult. Two caught on a hook set out at night tied to the bow with (clothesline) cable and eventually they got tired and drowned. Make the best "shark steak" of all the types I've tried imho.
The other (as mentioned) will haunt me until the day I die I guess. I know that sounds pretty cliche` but I'll never forget the blackness in the fuckers eyes while he rolled over and opened his trap. Was like from a movie. I just froze. Dad yelling SHARK !!!! kinda happened while I was "in the moment" but the 20 gauge shotgun is what really woke me out of my state. Well and the "ol man" screaming at me. "What the fuck did I tell you about waiting till the line stops before reaching in the water" . There were 10 -14 good size cod on the line (15 hooks per line). Myself and two cod landed on deck and the rest went with the shark. I don't have nightmares often but about once every five years, when I do, it's always that goddamned fn shark. Lmao. So yeah, fuck sharks, unless it's a Basking Shark. They cool!!

Edit: I was 13-14 at the time of the Great White
Originally from the Sou' west Nova Scotia. Spent summers fishing herring, swordfish, cod. pollock, tuna fishing, scallop dragging etc... off the Bay of Fundy, George's Banks and as far as Nfld.
