Maybe now, but when you live in a society with little creature comforts, large responsibilities towards the your family, community and your lord and necessitated growing up fast because life was often short and brutal, you find that people in their early teens were forced to grow up faster than we do now. It's the same reason why lot of people in more traditional societies get married at 16 (or 14 if they are a woman).

The speed at which you grow up doesn't change based on how much you need to grow up. We just had children thrust into those situations.

Not physically, but it does affect how you grow up mentally. We live in a society where we have a large amount of creature comforts, don't worry about death often that's very individualistic and where most people are well-off enough to not only survive but thrive. It's why our child-rearing strategy is more focused on having less children and extending childhood arguably into our 20s, which when most people start becoming more independent of their parents and start making their own life decisions. This type of lifestyle didn't even exist 200 years ago in most places, including in the Western world, which resulted in most people generally marrying young ( to people around their age of course (for the most part)) and living simple agrarian/hunter-gatherer type lives that are diametrically opposed to what we have now. You don't have the luxury of an extended carefree childhood in this type of living situation, which is why people wanted to have more children since they needed help on the farm. This is the world Jean d'Arc lived in and most of humanity along with her. Why you use modern standards of living to judge the shit people did in the past? Teenagers nowadays are retarded because they can afford to be. That was almost never the case in the past, unless you wanted to die an especially early death.
