If it was the Biden team suggesting the mute button, I might buy into the 4D chess idea. But it's the Debate committee, they have a vested interest in holding more debates.

And if they really think cutting Trump's mic is going to hurt him, then they have no idea what they're doing. Trump with a cut mic isn't going to stand meekly and cry, he's going to mug for the camera, roll his eyes, and accuse the moderators of being jumpy with the mute button. Without the opportunity for anyone off the stage to hear him, he'll spend his time distracting Biden. He's going to wander around the stage, or keep talking loud enough for Biden's mic to pick up, and make himself out to be the unfairly persecuted hero of the debate.

This guy is in the WWE Hall of Fame. Pro wrestling is famous for telling "stories" without having a mic in the ring, by overacting so the people "in the cheap seats" far away can tell what you're doing.

If he realizes this is coming and practices a bit, or has a folding chair and bottled water props waiting for him just off stage, Trump could turn the entire debate into a circus that makes the first one look sober.
