It's probably some version of the humanizing effect. If you reflexively dislike a person for no reason other than "he's mean" or "he's in an opposing political party", then suddenly seeing them as a human and not an abstract image can remove that dislike.

It's a polling conceit that job approval is based on some rational, thoughtful policy agreement/disagreement. Sometimes that number is just a reflection of an emotion. But voting is largely emotional as well.

It's probably because it's a humanizing factor.

"Look, even BoJo got the coof, he's in here in the trenches with us!"

That said, I feel like people overlooked the main difference between BoJo and Drumpf. BoJo had been pushing really hard for masks and shutdown protocols, and so it's really easy to sympathise when a leader goes down like that despite "strenous efforts".

Contrast that with Drumpf, who had been portrayed as not taking the virus seriously (we know it's really more nuanced than that, but that's the narrative), and so, it's really easy to justify this as just desserts.

Not sure about running for president but first name that comes to mind is Truman who got his first term because FDR died pretty quickly after being re-elected, and then went on to get a second term despite the newspapers predicting Dewey would win.

Also not sure if it's in the original constitution or an amendment or where but basically if the president dies and the VP ends up serving most of the president's term it's counted as the VP's term instead and they can only be elected for one additional term because of the term limit amendment.

I think its some level of perceived humility. Instead of being locked away in their insulated ivory tower, the leader is suffering alongside the people.

Its why people like the idea of a commander who leads their men into battle rather than keeping back and letting the pawns go first to die; despite it being a strategic catastrophe waiting to happen should said commander get waxed.

Or the great multilayered simulation we live in trolls everyone yet again and it's revealed that it was a false positive all along.

If he pulls through there is a 50/50 this will be the narrative. Even now with regular people its starting to become the narrative among the Doomers, Corona-Karens and Lockdown Bootlickers.
