To my understanding of certain western traditions: If magic were real and they were attempting to cause him harm through hexes or spells or dumb shit like this, it wouldn't be reflected because he's already sick so technically what was done in the past "worked" but now they're trying to "step it up" which is like "Hey we sure got him good by putting a firecracker in a bag of dog shit and leaving it on his porch! Let's try it with a quarter stick of dynamite!"
