They've got a fill light on him from the front, but the wall behind him is brightly lit by multiple sources that look like they should be casting a more heavy backlight on him, and they're using a very short depth of field, which blurs the background and makes him pop. It's probably because they had to set up at short notice.

No he wasn't. He was kept on supplemental oxygen as his O2 blood levels were becoming worrying, and carefully monitored in ICU. He was never ventilated or placed in a coma.
