A bit off-topic, but I read a fascinating book about religion in American South after the Civil War until roughly the 1930s and it gives a pretty good argument that poor blacks and poor whites were more similar to each other than to the middle class and how the religion of poor white people was influenced by African native faiths that are still extant in the regions of West Africa that were a huge source of slaves. It focuses mainly on the African influences on popular Christianity, but it incidentally gives a pretty good argument that class is a much larger divider than race.
Hard, Hard Religion: Interracial Faith in the Poor South by John Hayes. Looks like it's reasonably priced on Kindle, though I had a library copy.

So I brought up a story in the Lowtax thread but it didn't really fit there so I will post it here, you guys seem to be on the same topic already anyway.
Let me take you back to a year long, long ago, during the last great goon rush on an MMO that I am aware of. 2014. The game is Archeage, a shitty pay to win gindfest that, to my knowledge, had pretty much already failed in both other markets it was released in by the time noted shitty game company Trion picked it up to release in the west. $150 preorder packs were released, bad decisions were made, goons were getting into it because it promised lots of looting and plundering and large scale PvP, with more land and even castles to own (to be released at a later date, naturally).
So for the people who had more money than sense an alpha and eventually beta would launch to test the game and translation, with bugs and missing translations reported that were never fixed because hey, they got the money, whatever. A friend of mine spent that time playing with the big planned goon group that had made their own offsite and structure at that point, naturally they had big plans to dominate and a hand full of other huge spergy guilds went to different servers because of the specter of goons ruining their spergy fun. Little did they know it would not turn out like that. My friend at that point had a bad feeling about the goon group, his feelings paraphrased were: "that Leadership is a huge fucking disaster just waiting to happen".
So beta over, headstart happens and is a huge disaster, not because of anything goons did just yet. People who had all paid for that expensive preorder pack I mentioned earlier was sitting in solid eight hour queues, got in, got disconnected again, just to queue up again. Now land ownership is massively important in that game as most worthwhile things were player built and had to be farmed somewhere, the best shit of course cam from privately owned land that was getting taken up fast and mostly by teleporting bots that sold that land at massively inflated prices or just automated it to craft or farm shit and sell that at massively inflated prices.
So anyway, the goon group manages to snatch up a fair chunk of land in a very shitty, PvP always enabled part of the map, which probably suited them fine starting out, with hundreds of people playing and them actually being somewhat feared among the general population. Now at this point I want to mention that following the advice of my friend I am not playing with goons, I am playing with a small group elsewhere that ended up going to shit for entirely different and not important in context reasons, but am still on their offsite and following the main thread that I can't find anymore. Luckily they liked airing their dirty laundry and openly discussing and/or melting down outside of the game so things were fairly easy to observer.
A week or two in some problems arose. The leadership of the goon guild was apparently a fairly cohesive group that had played other things together, but there were other people promoted to officer status as well, I have no idea how it was determined who though, may have been by dedication to the game and having time zones covered. So anyway, someone who was not part of that inner circle had kicked someone named BobFromMarketing, who was a well known person in EVE circles and was I believe kicked from there too because it came out he was grooming a 16 year old from Norway (Don't remember how that came out though). Well so far so good, right? Nah, he was apparently also part of that inner circle friend group so the initial kicker was kicked, and Bob promptly reinstated. This raised a massive stink among the general population of the guild, even though leadership tried to defend him weakly. "Look at how much wool he produces!", was one of the arguments (remember here how I talked about the crafting system earlier, and goons, having big plans, needed massive amounts of materials to get the unwashed masses their own ships. Eventually. After the leadership had the best possible shit of course).
Now also let me tell you that there are two BobFromMarketing from EVE, and the other guy, while being not involved here, obviously hates this one because people confuse them.
After massive outcry on the forums the guy actually gets removed but a little later it is actually revealed that leadership, again, did not just sit by but reintroduced him to the guild on one or several alts, to keep the wool flowing I assume. Now at this point the guild is kind of over it for the most part, lots of people leave from this, or the game being shit in general but even with all that, the guild is not done. No, that happens after a pact is made with non goon fleets because you see, fishing in this game needs to be done in open PvP enabled waters and were the best way to make money and the pact said that goons couldn't raid them if they had even a single goon with them, which they didn't that time, they got raided, leadership still got mad about it even though the raiding party had stuck to the pact.
The baffling part at this point is that once the situation died down people kept coming into the thread to shield the groomer, adding wonderful defenses to the wool defense, such as "it didn't even happen in America", and "well of course he did, 16 is the hottest age". The best one though was a guy who claimed to be 70 and a retired cop, who chose the hill of semantics to die on, saying how it's not pedophilia. it's ephebophilia at that point. He would not let this go. At this point the thread was either deleted or pushed to the gas chamber, or whatever they call it now, I can't tell which because I sure can't find it anymore. Of course people were not done arguing so they kept making new threads which lead to
None of those threads seem to be around anymore either from what I can tell but the end result was that the guild was really shattered, the few goons who stuck with the game found other guilds, and goon rushes that big aren't a thing anymore, although that may also have to do with nobody really releasing big MMOs anymore.
Well that was long winded and I trailed off a bit but I tried to cover everything while also suffering from massive headaches, may come back to clean up but I hope you enjoy this story of the last great goonrush.

But, the initial goon leadership in ArcheAge was a goon by SCT and just his random friends and hanger-ons.
A second wave of officers was promoted when the guild became far too large (it peaked at 1700 people). Among the second wave were more traditional MMO posters, and a ton of EVE Online goon directors, who were trying to make inroads into the game. This was during EVE goons/Imperium's big "we are a multiplatform group that can play anything" period, which failed spectacularly.
The officer who kicked BobFromMarketing("BFM") initially was a goon called Kimsemus (we've talked about him a little bit before, as he eventually split from SA to found BMW with a few others, which according to the schizophrenic posters of the forums, are the fascists terrorizing the SA forums to this day), who had initially defended BFM in the SA thread because many posters assumed it was stupid EVE drama, until someone dropped a screenshot by BFM's accuser explaining the situation on the EVE Online goon offsite. Kimsemus kicked BFM, banned him from the offiste, then posted in the IRC about it. This caused a ton of drama, especially because even at this point SCT was vehemently defending BFM.
SCT and his friends eventually outright left the goon guild over it (and subsequently SA), and simultaneously the oldest goon on the forums then toxxed himself defending the difference between being an actual pedophile and just "wanting" to be a pedophile.
Kimsemus seized control of the guild, then banned all the EVE director/goon types who were apparently nonstop trying to get BFM back in to make a point, or something. Which is odd, because BFM was banned from their offsite and his posts were purged long before this. In retaliation, the EVE goons banned all the ArcheAge guild officers from all the offsites they had control of, and blacklisted them from games they didn't even play.
What *is* interesting is that the first inkling of DaBigRedBoat (some infamous EVE goon and school teacher) being a sexual assaulter was slipped in the ArcheAge IRC and posted:
Widestancer, mentioned above, was a prolific FYAD poster in this period, who I assume was in the guild leadership as well, because she would provide up to the minute updates in the FYAD and MMOHMO thread about what was going on in the game.
If you want an idea of just how bad it was in guild leadership between EVE types and the SA goons, Widestancer (or Kimsemus himself, I cant remember, either way someone just leaked their whole private officer forum which caused a bad situation to get worse) and posted this in FYAD from the ArcheAge offiste:
As someone who didn't even get their character to max level or play beyond the first few weeks of launch, this was a lot of fun to watch, and was probably the best the SA game forums had been in a long time. FYAD concern-trolling the forums over it made it even better.
Now, if you want my controversial view, I think ArcheAge did a ton of damage to whatever goon gaming community was around then, because no game after that mustered the kind of numbers ArcheAge did, and was the first step that saw most of the goons leave SA posting to retreat to a nascent Discord platform. I think the whole public spectacle just demonstrated to a lot of people the drama wasn't worth it.

Thanks for filling in the blanks, I did not remember that Kimsemus kicked the guy but he did kill the fishing pact later so I guess he's more of a cool guy than I thought. But the entire thing was amazing to experience from the sidelines, easily my favorite saga on SA.

As someone who only tracked most of the drama from the forums, what is the fishing pact lore? I know it became kind of a forum meme along with "kimsemus did nothing wrong" etc, but I have little context for where it all stems from.

Well I'm glad you asked, this needs a bit more information since I didn't really spell it out in my longer thing.
So you see, making money in Archeage was done through hauling packs from point A to point B, the longer they journey, the more money you got for it. Over land this was done by building and upgrading a truck, the initial model needing only a few materials, later models requiring real money purchases of tickets, alongside even more, even rarer materials. Fish were like those packs only special, unlike those other kinds you didn't have to craft them, you went out to sea to catch them, in fairly expensive fishing boats ideally, I don't know if you could even put them in slots on regular cargo ships. Often people formed fishing fleets since the open seas are also open PvP areas and you don't want someone to come along, sink your shit, steal your money, and laugh at you. You also didn't want to do the other kind of packs since they required materials, and those land journeys were really fucking tedious and also trolls could just use their tractors to block chokepoints and you couldn't do shit about that. Also fishing was the most consistent and lucrative way anyway.
So the fishing pact was a pact between most if not all the major guilds to not really fuck with each other there but couldn't sell it to goons as many of them were there to pirate and just hunt down the people doing the fishing so essentially the order was to not attack fleets if they have goons with them because stealing from goons is bad. You know what they really meant though was not to fuck with people fishing at all since of course, having all the fishing fleets closed off to your guys and having all the other guilds mad at you will interfere with shit something major.
Kimsemus took out a raiding fleet and raided some fishermen who had no goons with them, couldn't even find one as a token goon to protect them I suppose, but yes, Kimsemus did nothing wrong but people still got mad that someone actually did PvP and a full PvP area and a game built around PvP in anything not the first few zones. Also it was possible to turn on PvP even within your faction with a mode you'd turn on like you turn on PvP in other games, so people expecting nobody to fuck with them was just kind of dumb. The goon leadership expecting goons not to fuck with others was just kind of next level naive.

I had not known that DBRB wound up being a sexual assaulter. Christ. I remember that he caused one of the most spectacular fuckups in EVE Online history, though, by accidentally teleporting an incredibly expensive ship into enemy territory and forcing a panicked rescue effort by an enormous goon armada, which failed horribly.
One thing that's come to mind, too, regards the history of goons in EVE. I'd need to look back further into it, but my recollection is that Darius JOHNSON was not the first goon leader in that game; rather it was some dude called Remedial who managed to fulfill and exceed every fucking goon stereotype. Remedial was loud, obese, angry, autistic, treacherous, disgusting, addicted to ham, neckbearded, and so on -- and I can't even recall why he left Goonfleet, but there was some kind of kerfluffle over who owned the copyright to the name Goonfleet after that.
Remedial became particularly infamous for an incident that occurred some months (or maybe a year) after his departure, too. Someone posted a thread on EVE Online's forums titled "Goonswarm titan spotted" (back when that type of spaceship was unheard of in-game) and it was a bunch of photos of Remedial banging his equally obese wife.
