City of Heroes private server drama - reddit mods get a hold of the game's code and proceed to hog it to themselves

I know I am late to this but wasn't another reason the private server hate was a thing was because a lot of these replacement projects had access to the private servers? Like they took money to make a COH replacement all the while playing the original COH, hence the getting nowhere with said projects. Didn't Project Phoenix and City of Titan get a lot of money to make their games? Are those still coming out or did they just take the money and run?

I think those are still coming out. A former CoH youtuber made a video not too long ago about alpha testing City of titans though, tbh it seems like a lost cause

Yea I forget which one wanted to do it but they were talking about Freeform for characters and I just lost interest in all of the spiritual successors. I mean Freeform is what makes Champions Online suck ass so why even bother going that route.

I was almost ready to brush this off, but the talks about this are getting way too aggressively deleted. Why are so many pedo defenders in positions of power?
>>position of power
Tranny Jannies aren't in a position of power that actually matters in any real sense. As for pedos becoming mods? I dunno, probably because it's easier to hide how much of a fucked up weirdo you are when you are online and among other people who may only be slightly less weird and fucked up at most.

What boogies the mind for me is how the guy who essentially did the most underhanded dirty shit to the community by hiding and gaslighting the game for 7 years smuggled his way back into the top position of power at the largest server. How the fuck do people let that happen?

Maybe he knows and is friends with the people who own the server? Cliques can be funny things that way sometimes, I dunno for sure what's happening over there, though. What I do know is that you'd be better off playing with 4chan people on /coxg/ then you would wasting time with any of the mainstream servers.

That is absolutely the case. Its basically his private server after the last one and his code-hoarding got revealed.
From what the devs and the owner of coxg stated the other night in their discord. The owners of Homecoming pay leandro the pedo to run their servers and use his secret server of 7 years as a beta test ground for new development that the pedo guy makes.

basically they pay him to run it.

Something of a necro but apparently Homecoming and NCSoft now have an official understanding.

NCSOFT & Homecoming License Announcement

Hello everyone!

We’d like to thank you all for your patience over the past few years, and we’re incredibly thrilled to announce that it’s paid off: NCSOFT® has officially granted Homecoming a license to host City of Heroes™.

We’ll have much more to share on this in the coming months, however right now we’d like to make a few things clear:
  • Your accounts and characters are safe
  • Development of new content will continue
  • Homecoming will continue to be completely free
  • We will continue to be funded entirely through donations
We will be on hand in this thread to answer any questions you may have, so ask away - however, please be aware that we aren’t able to talk about everything just yet, but we will be sure to answer as much as we can as soon as we are able.

Exciting times are ahead!
Announcement FAQ

What kind of deal is this? What does it mean for Homecoming?
Homecoming has been granted a license to operate a City of Heroes™ server and further develop the game – subject to conditions and limitations under the contract – but, as between us and NCSOFT®, NCSOFT still owns the City of Heroes intellectual property and its derivatives.

I'm new here! What is Homecoming? Can I play City of Heroes now?
Welcome! Homecoming is an officially-licensed City of Heroes server, and yes, you can play right now!

Head over to the Getting Started page for information on creating an account and downloading the game. Take a look through our main FAQ for answers to common queries, and be sure to join our Discord (discord.gg/cityofheroes) for news and server status updates. See you in the city!

Will Homecoming remain free and donation-funded?
We don’t currently foresee any changes to our funding model, as Homecoming is not required to pay any up-front or recurring license fees. We continue to be overwhelmed by the generosity of the community when it comes to keeping the server online.

Are there any financial implications?
Yes, we anticipate that:
  1. Our overheads will increase slightly to keep up with our commitments as a licensee.
  2. In the short term we will be increasing our donation targets in order to build up a disaster recovery fund. This will be roughly equivalent to 30% of our annual costs. Additionally, we will have some one-off legal costs for some updates to our consumer documentation (Privacy Policy, Terms of Service, etc).
  3. We’re now free to explore alternate hosting options, which may alter our ongoing costs.
Can NCSOFT still demand that Homecoming shuts down?
Yes. NCSOFT has always had (and will continue to have) the right to demand that Homecoming shuts down.

This agreement provides a framework under which Homecoming can operate the game in a way that complies with NCSOFT’s wishes in hopes of minimizing the chances of that happening. We’ve had a really positive and productive relationship with NCSOFT for over four years now, so we do not anticipate there being any issues.

What does this deal mean for other servers that aren’t Homecoming?
NCSOFT has granted Homecoming a limited license. Other servers are out of scope.

Wasn’t Homecoming working with some other servers?
Our hope is that our license will help us consolidate our userbase with City of Heroes fans from other servers.

What does this mean for development? Will Homecoming be able to go open source?
Development will continue, and we will be expanding the development team under the terms of the license agreement. We do not anticipate moving away from a closed-source development model.

What does this mean for live streaming and YouTube videos?
Live streaming and YouTube videos of gameplay footage on Homecoming will continue to be permitted. Monetization is also permitted, but all video content must be free for the viewer to access (ie: no paywalled content).

Our Code of Conduct applies to any video content created, and we will take action against players who create videos featuring violations of the Code of Conduct, including those that feature or use third-party copyrighted content. For more examples of what kind of content is permitted in City of Heroes streams, please see our Code of Conduct.

Will there be any changes to the Code of Conduct or Terms of Service?
The existing User Agreement has been superseded by our new Terms of Service. The Code of Conduct and Privacy Policy have also received minor updates.

Does this impact my ability to play the game? Will my characters be deleted?
There will be no rollbacks or resets of any kind, nor will there be any real changes to our day-to-day operations. You can continue playing as you do today, provided that you comply with our Terms of Service and Code of Conduct.

However, we will be discontinuing support for Tequila and similar launchers in the coming months. Providing an in-house installation and patching solution is part of fulfilling our side of the license agreement (this was a key reason behind the development of the Homecoming Launcher).

Will NCSOFT have access to our personal data?
No, they will not.

Will the management of Homecoming change in any way?
Yes. We will be forming a new leadership group - the City Council - to head up the project going forwards.

The City Council will include the original Homecoming admin team, representatives from the other servers we have been working with, and a few additional members from our Game Master and Development teams. Cipher will remain the project lead.

How can I get involved with Homecoming? Are you recruiting developers and Game Masters?
Yes and yes! Thank you for your interest in helping out.
Please note that in order to join the team you will be required to sign a Contributor Agreement covering confidentiality and the volunteer nature of the position (no compensation can be provided, in-game or otherwise). All applications are subject to Homecoming’s Privacy Policy.

Please also be aware that there’s a chance we may receive far more applications than we can deal with in a timely manner and it may take quite a while before we can respond to your application.

Is Homecoming still going to be registering as an NPO?
This is something we are still intending to do. This process was put on hold when the discussions reached an advanced stage, as changing our legal structure during the drafting process would’ve been an unnecessary complication.

Not played this thing in quite a while, no doubt it's stuffed full of all sorts of drama and degenerate incest like all MMO stuff. But I remember getting sane answers to most questions on the forums for build stuff so might dust off and check in. If nothing else there's at least one new powerset since I was last on.

Something of a necro but apparently Homecoming and NCSoft now have an official understanding.
I don't buy it. Nobody's been able to contact NCSoft for years except for people who also can't share receipts, not even Bryan Dunn could convince people he had a lead. This also completely ignores all the Lineage 2 private servers that have for-profit microtransactions and haven't been approached with any legal action despite it being their most profitable game.

Oh, and they can't talk about the "conditions and limitations under the contract" because they signed another NDA, and if you want to work with them you need to sign an NDA. Nobody does this that isn't completely fake and homosexual.

Also it's been this long and Homecoming hasn't done shit, so what's the point?

I have no feelings about this game, one way or the other. I'm just interested in knowing if this MMORPG is a good environment for people that like to be on the bottom of a pecking order, since a personal lolcow like that used to be a CoH player.

I don't... think so? I've never seen that sort of thing myself even when the official servers were running.

Heck, it's entirely possible to solo 90 percent of the mission content (not counting task forces and raids).

Was this on the private server that Sean Astin was financing? I wonder if he did it for love of the game or if he was trying to make koney from it.
