It’s actually a server for Deviantart Death Battle writers. They originally went by DA DB Community, but they recently rebranded themselves to Death Battle Writers United.

One of the server’s mods works for the show’s research team. It used to be two, but I’m not sure if the other, Strunton, is still working with them. He got into some hot water awhile back when the rest of the server started insulting him about being religious and not supporting LGBT rights, which culminated in him getting banned. Last I heard, some of the server’s members were considering sending his “LGBTphobic” messages to Ben to punish him, but nothing seems to have come up about that. The only things that have changed would be the server’s mods becoming more “progressive” and any mentions of Strunton either being done with disdain or being skirted around.

I just remember reading a lot of the battles on DA, and I thought a lot of the matchups were interesting and the quality of the writing made for interesting fights because they weren't limited by things like animation or episode time. And lots of people even made their own hosts, their own Wiz and Boomstick. Then a lot of the people I was reading retired and the new people weren't as good and I just stopped going to DA in general. It was years ago.

Same here, though from what I’ve seen on the server, there are a few writers whose battles are arguably on par with the old writers’.

It's been a long ass time since I read Soul Eater, but I do remember that Crona had some insane bullshit that would make killing them real damn hard.

They really shouldn't have needed to bullshit a win for Crona since he specifically has attacks that hit the "wavelengths" of his enemies, something Venom would undoubtably be vulnerable to, while also being pretty unkillable himself.

Although that's a moot point. This just proves that Death Battle will decide who wins on a whim and with this in mind retroactively proves my point that Death Battle will never go back on any of their episodes despite dozens of people civilly proving them wrong.

Still, this season fucking blows.

The thing keeping Death Battle from being raked over the coals more is that the majority of viewers don't give enough of a shit to actually dive into detail to actually see if the result is actually "valid" or not. Also, it's probably hard to say a vs show like Death Battle is wrong without looking like a "butthurt fanboy".

Watched the anime, haven't read the manga (have heard the two are pretty different), but given that I've heard Maka has some crazy shit, I'm inclined to take your word for it.

I'd say it's more "people only see the hosts and none of the behind the scenes stuff" along with people only caring who wins and who's next without caring about the research aspect that's keeping them from being just another vs show.

Just checked through the Discord server and found that one of the members of the research team explained why they didn’t include scaling to Cates‘ stuff for Venom. This was after one of the guys on the G1 blog brought it up.
