I agree that the US was largely formed from Protestant and enlightenment values. Even far left politics can trace some of their values to Protestantism and the enlightenment. I’ve noticed that a lot of edgy conservatives have been rejecting the enlightenment entirely. It’s not surprising then that this would attract some conservative Catholics who were never on board to begin with.

I’d say the northeast colonies were more religious states than ethnic states but I can see how one can compare the two. Basically they formed governments or political bodies around an identity but that identity is religion rather than culture.

Overall, they weren’t too found of Catholics regardless of if they were British, Irish, or German. They skirmished with each other but it was never as bad as the European conflicts. During the American revolution though there was considerable violence between Anglicans and other Protestant denominations, especially in the South. Some colonists would also actively evangelize various Native Americans.
