A very small autistic technical point while I remember.
The laptop that Hunter took in to repair was a Mac. Mac's have different OS's and hardware to PC's.
The hardware that Rude Boy G was flashing was an 'LG' which is a PC. Now of course you can still stick a Linux OS on there. But I heard Mac can be a bit finicky unless you go all the way to knocking up a Hackintosh.
I know you can use Live CD's and USB's and whatnot with Linux on to retrieve data and do forensics, but that laptop that Rudy had, would that have been able to boot up with the necessary files to showcase what was on there? Whenever you do system migrations, even between similar hardware, you still have small driver issues which can be big enough to stop a system booting, or just cause random problems later.
What I'm saying is I find it unlikely that that system he had booted up in to anything more than a kind of DOS system just for recovering files. It doesn't really represent a clone of what the system was with the full MacOS. And I would have thought that they could have dug out an old Mac to clone it on so this was not the case - that it read perfectly if cloned.
Did anyone take Rudy up on the looking at the files thing?
I'm sure it's all legit, but something just seems a bit off to me. I've repaired and built a few desktops. I've even repaired a few laptops. I'm pretty clued in with Linux as well and also Virtual Machines. MacOS is a pain in the arse, even for virtualising, but also for rebuilding on other hardware. Maybe I'm just a thicko though. I get a lot of the tech, but I don't see how that Laptop with Rudy could be operational in anyway, other than a DOS screen type of thing, and that wouldn't convince anyone hoping to read Outlook screens.
I'm sure I'm just a fucking idiot and I got the wrong end of the stick. I've been following the comments and I can see that there are some proper tech people here, so this is a genuine question, even though it makes me look a bit dumb.
TL;DR: Can you boot a HD from a Mac on an LG PC Laptop?
I use the 'Restore to dissimilar hardware' feature on my backup/cloning software all the time. I even clone whole machines sometimes by buying the actual hardware to put it on so the drivers will be the same.
I've never put a MacOS on a PC though.
Sorry for the sperging. I didn't really put forward a very good question there. Dyspraxia. Fuckin' bitch.
It's probably not important anyway. Just something a bit fucky about putting a Mac HD with a MacOS on it on a PC Laptop and it reading perfectly. I don't do this for a living and haven't done it for a while so there's probably something major I'm missing.
ETA:
Another quick note to say that sometimes you can't take the hard drive out and just do a factory reset, because the problem lies with the very hard drive itself. So yeah, you can get a clean compo, but there is nothing to fix and your data still won't be readable. Those that have fixed computers for years will know what I mean. It might be something as simple as a corrupted MBR record which anyone could fix with a window recovery CD (sure Mac has this too).
Sometimes it's not your compo fucking up but it's a Hard Drive Recovery problem. Hard disks can be rebuilt. There are forums on the net that show you how to do this. You don't even need a clean room. If you ain't got 1000 bucks, you can attempt this shit yourself.
Sometimes the very reason people put their Laptop in to a repair shop is to descramble or repair simple things like Boot order if it's a multiboot machine or even if it's not the MBR can still get corrupted and it won't boot - OH NOES I LOST ALL MY CP - so they take it in to repair thinking naively that they deal with this shit every day so won't nosey around the HD. WRONG.
I doubt that Hunter was messing about with mulit-boot or dual-boot Linux/Windows, but still, HD shit can get corrupted and an end user would not know that. The very reason he might have taken it in is because of the fact all that shit was so toxic and valuable and he did not have it backed up. He just counted on the fact the techs would not be nosey. Then again, there are serious laws with serious prison time for just being nosey. I'm sure the person that called this in did it all by the book.
