Kindergarten teacher faces backlash over ‘terrible’ off-the-clock behavior: ‘Teachers are people too’

A teacher is wondering if she set a bad example for her students when they caught her drinking wine and swearing while off the clock.
She went on Reddit’s r/AmITheAsshole forum to find out if she had behaved inappropriately. The unexpected incident happened when the teacher was dining at the same restaurant as a couple of her students and their parents. Though she didn’t behave belligerently and wasn’t drunk, the mother overheard her using curse words and saw her drink alcohol.

“Last weekend was my 27th birthday. I went to a restaurant with a couple friends for outdoor dining,” she stated. “While we were there, two moms come in with their children and are seated behind me. I recognize them as students in my in-person class. They say hi to me and I say hi back, but then don’t interact further.”
The teacher had a couple of glasses of wine with her friends and, during dinner, enjoyed a casual conversation that included profanity. She used phrases like “the news is s***” and “it’s too d*** hot to be fall.”

“I’m not speaking loudly or anything. Just having normal conversations with my friends,” she wrote. “One of the moms then comes over to me and reminds me that my students were there and that I shouldn’t be drinking and cursing in front of them. Since I’m their teacher, it was my job to set a good example for them. I just told her I was off the clock and that if it was bothering her, she could move or stop listening to me. She got all huffy and they soon left.”

Days later, the mom went to the teacher’s school and reported her to the principal.
“She was angry and complained that I was setting a bad example for my students,” she said. “And now her daughter was using some of the same words I was using, saying that if her teacher can say it, so can she. He asked for my side of the story and I just explained exactly what happened. Given that she verified my story, he told her that I was not their teacher at the time and since I wasn’t doing anything wrong, they couldn’t control my behavior off the clock. She protested a bit, but eventually left [and] called me a terrible teacher.”

Though the principal took her side, he also suggested that she shouldn’t have drunk alcohol or used foul language that day. Reddit users weighed in.

“They can’t expect you to be the teacher 24/7. Teachers are people, too,” one user commented.

“You are allowed to have a life,” another said. “This mom needs to back the heck off.”

“Why couldn’t the parents move if it was bothering them?” someone wrote.

Why is the onus on the teacher, who only has to worry about the children 8 hours a day when she is paid to, rather than on the parents, who brought them into the world?

If you don't like seeing how your children's teacher is behaving ON THEIR OWN TIME then BE A PARENT and fucking leave the restaurant.
Because it's easier to get a teacher fired than to have a parent take responsibility for their actions.

I agree that the parents need to get a fucking grip and actually set a good enough example for their kids that when they tell them not to swear in front of them, they don't swear. But if you are in a public facing job, and you then meet someone who only knows you in the context of said job, you either need to accept that the person might be a shitheel and stop caring entirely/avoid them, or accept that they're going to see you as still working and moderate your behavior.

I've taught children before and I'd avoid them like the plague unless I was being paid to be near them, and avoid the parents, and avoid the siblings as well. The only time I wanted to be anywhere near those kids, or anything related to them was in a working context. It's honestly not worth the hassle of trying to get unreasonable people to try and wrap their head around the idea that just because you are paid to look after kids, it doesn't mean they are your kids.

Drinking in a restaurant (not drunk): who cares
should probably not swear when you're sitting so close to young children whether you're their teacher or not, though
Yeah, that's just having the bare minimum of class. I refrain from cursing in front of children and my elders because I'm an adult who has impulse control.

Everyone in that "article" is a retard. Dumb bitch mom telling a teacher she can't continue her own dinner and then bitching (and probably lying) to the school about her kids response to the incident and then dumb bitch teacher going to fucking reddit for validation.

The volume had to be pretty high for the teacher to be heard at the tables.
This isn't the Victorian Age, but women today have ZERO class in public.
Just due to an individual's personal bias, I would take everything she said and amplify it by 10x.
-She was drunk.
-She was being grossly offensive.

Be smart, drink at a dive bar after work. Don't be a stupid hoe. If you want to be in public, act like you have class. Especially if you will be teaching one on Monday.

The news is complete defecation. And if it's hot out, it's hot out.

And this still falls back on the mother. "My daughter says that if you say these words so can she". Well, you're the parent, do your job and lay down the rules.

Right. And like that's the first time the kid has ever heard anyone swear? Why is only "if my teacher says these words"?" Why not "if Grandma says them"? Or "Uncle Joe" or whoever. Granted, maybe her family doesn't have a vocabulary like mine, but just because the adults in my family swore, that doesn't mean my parents put up with ME doing so.

AMTA is also on Twitter, and I'll bet half of those stories are fake.

"So, I was getting my asshole fucked by a retarded nigger faggot in prison. Like, my o-ring looked like a Aztec altar from all the blood. Anyways, after that was done, in revenge I legit burned that faggot nigger in his cell while his cocksucking bunkmate screamed like fire ants just bit into his scrotum, so I told that lesbian looking spud sucking mick to - "

"Woah. Hey, is that kids over at the next table?"

"Oh, huh. Yeah, ha. Thats some of my students. Whatever man. I'm trying to burn off some steam and I got a life to live."

Lack of professionalism.

No matter what industry you are in, if you're around a customer or client in a social setting you have to maintain a basic level of awareness that whatever you do can reflect badly on your employer.

If nothing else finish dinner and suggest going to an adult environment for more drinks with your friends.

I believe in current year this is known as 'adulting'.
I keep getting away doing much worse in public just because I'm not surrounded by "concerned parents" teachers are so oppressed, that's why they suck so much at their job, it's not fair.

You needed to end with:

"Oh, Hi Mark..."

Granted, a lot of school districts have to take what they can get in terms of teachers, and this one was just spotted in her natural habitat, drinking and making statements that you wouldn't say in the classroom.

At the same time, it's hardly scandalous, she wasn't caught with some lewd OnlyFans account or doing something illegal.

You are never 'off the clock' unless you are terminated. Even your union will drop you like a hot potato.
Every job I ever had has made this crystal clear.
If you don't understand this, understand it now.
