Most Catholics - and all religious people, really - don't actually know the deep inner workings of the faith or institutions. Most Catholics have never read Thomas Aquinas or anything like that, and I'd be surprised if many are familiar with Vatican II is. In fact, you get branded as somewhat of a radical if you bring it up.
Many Priests may disagree, and when I spoke to mine you can tell there's a lot of conversations they will just veer away from, but this is also why they are so adamant about building inroads with Jews among other things. What you are seeing right now is a lot of nominal Catholics for the first time looking into what authority the Pope truly has, what this means, how is dissent treated, what challenged canonical law, etc. I generally think it's a fool's errand to hold even TradCaths up to the standard of if they don't have a PhD in Theology they should all shut the fuck up and if anyone eats a drumstick on Friday it means all sodomy should be encouraged. Even Muslims want kafir pussy, I'm not going to get into a debate with them about how they're doing it wrong cause it's literally only on-the-fence Protestants that react to that and nobody would argue that Muslims are less of an influence or threat because they didn't read the fine print.

I think Nick's main problem is that he uses Catholicism as a shield, not that he does it incorrectly. He thinks women are retarded at politics, he thinks gay culture sucks, he thinks Tradition is important, fine. Those arguments can be made with a wide variety of sources, including political theory and philosophy. There are actually very nuanced and intricate arguments that can be made on these topics. What doesn't work is quoting scripture, especially if you are debating non-Christians. This is the problem in general on the Right as I see it and it's not limited to Nick.

You can't speak on the value of tradition unless you can explain its value, in detail, to someone who hates tradition. The answer can't be "it just works, it's just nature, this is how it's always been done." That betrays a lack of understanding as to why it became nature and why it was done that way. You see the exact same thing with Capitalists Vs. Marxists, the Capitalist might say "it just works!" But that's the comment of a casual observer. So one might say when a religious system falls, chaos reigns, degeneracy reigns, you need a firm moralistic order with an alignment with a higher power. Fair enough. Now you need to explain to me why the Catholic order is better than the Muslim order, or even something like the Third Reich order which still had a spiritual and moralistic authority. What separates these, what are the value judgments you can make? And you can't say "ours is the true word of God," not if you want to win, not if you want to show a mastery of the topic. Only an atheist believes the only difference between religions is "we believe God didn't actually choose your guy."
