Furry Fandom and Drama General

JFK's right. It's too late to put the genie back in the bottle. The time to put the kibbosh on the fetishists was in the early days, and that didn't happen. Furries will forever be associated with kink and various forms of sick perversity, and that's sad, because many furries aren't into that shit (literally and/or figuratively).

That's the thing. We tried. We tried as far back as 1998 to push back against all of the creeps. The problem is that the people who were spearheading this organization were a bunch of assholes with problems reaching far outside of the furry fandom, things like homophobia and whatnot. Because of this, no one paid much attention to the Burned Furs. Had they not been complete shitheads about the way they carried themselves, there may have been some noticeable progress made. But you are right, it is far too late now.

I personally was not a member of the Burned Furs, as at the time I was busy with school and I could barely find the time to even keep up with the comics I was reading, but I agree with their ideology minus all of the hateful stuff.

I don't think it's completely impossible, but it would take more of a prolonged, concerted effort than I think most furs would be willing to invest. What you need to start with are a few medium and larger cons to adopt strict No Perv policies, and clearly explain why pervs are not welcome. So, no pervs in public spaces, no pervs in the artists alley, no pervs in the vendors room, no perv room parties, no sexualized or fetish bullshit allowed in any way associated with the con whatsoever. The showrunners would have to practically be Nazis about it, but it's the only way. I think the normal furs would flock to such cons run on a basis like that. Also, take a page from the Tumblr SJW playbook and begin public shaming perv furry artists on DA and Fur Affinity and other places like that. Encourage furry sites like FA to reject perv art and fetish bullshit. Let these sites and the people who use them know there are strict rules and boundaries and some things are simply no longer allowed for the good of all furries. Lots of furs know the pervs make them all look bad by association, so there may still be a chance to rehabilitate furrydom. But it's a long shot, would take several years of consistent vigilance and pressure, and all in all, a hell of a lot of work, maybe even some money. So most likely this is an unattainable goal now. Still, I'd like to see it given a go.

You know sites like DA and FA will not do that.. That's what they practically live on. Even the guy who "owns" FA is gigantic perv and fetishist.

The entire economy is based on porn. And furries are all pervs, frankly. Also, this:

The showrunners would have to practically be Nazis about it

Who would do that? Other than the furry pervs who fetishize Nazis. . .

It's not impossible I don't think, but you'd basically forever have a split group of "militant prudes" vs "fetish monsters." There will be separate websites, separate cons...and I sincerely doubt the straight lacers will have a large enough number of constituents to be able to beat back the sexual image in the public eye. And basically, if you can't win over the public, what would be the point? Last thing as @Super Collie pointed out, even non fetish people in the furry fandom tend to be socially maladjusted douchebags or autistic weirdos - so you're left fighting a losing battle against multiple fronts just for a sense of "normalcy." Not really worth it IMHO. May as well just dig out your own little hole in the fandom and chill with your friends while mocking all the bad behavior - sorta like this place.

Alas, even then I don't think that kind of drastic action will be enough. The damage has already been done, and the time to fix it was in the early age of the internet.
But, if the fandom cleaned itself up it would at least be a step in the right direction.

What might need to happen is an outside influence to put the fandom back into the non-sexual spotlight. Furries need a rallying point. They need a Star Trek, or Star Wars. They need a Dr Who, or a Lord of the Rings. They need a" furry" intellectual property to be released that is so popular, and so well publicized, that it simply can't be ignored, and may even invite copycats.
If something like that could happen, and the furs could clean up their act, then maybe, just maybe, it would become a mainstream fandom.

I don't know, they had My Little Pony and everyone knows how that turned out.

I strongly disagree with the idea that 'furries' can be redeemed. There is absolutely no chance to turn a fandom composed of mainly perverted and/or retarded, autistic people. The minority that is the people who might be called normal is so few in numbers, thus their stance on the matter is easily ignored.

Agreed; the only cure for Furry-ism is fire and lots of it!

Pfft. Trying to get furries to give up their porn? No chance.

Where've you been the last few decades? *sigh*

edit: While I do think there can be a distinction between "new furry" and "old furry", I feel like that change has already happened and did so when no one was paying attention. A few more people uploaded a few more "weird" pictures to VCL. Those few people told a few people. A few people with a questionable interest in things like Tiny Toons and Disney cartoons were compulsively combing the web for every single site about their crushes, and lo and behold at some point someone hit the motherlode that was the furry fandom and then the floodgates opened.

I do think more conventions need to be much more stringent on the weird shit that people do in the lobbies. A convention free of perverts and social fuck-ups is completely doable and in fact has already happened. It was called Albany Anthrocon 1997.

The people who run large conventions and large furry websites are essentially the voice and image of the fandom, and what do they have to say? Well, for starters one of the high profile people in the fandom today is known for his silicone dragon dicks and he's making money hand over fist. Furries celebrate that shit. Zeta Creations existed at the time of the early furcons, but you didn't see them with tables at conventions proudly hocking dog dicks to passersby. The people who maintain the image of the fandom have no interest in changing the status quo because it's making them a ton of money.

Rebranding smaller cons or starting completely new ones free of the riff raff that litters every other convention is a fantastic idea. I wish someone had the balls to step up and make one (because I don't *sigh* ) because I'd back it any way I could, even if that meant just showing up with my partner to pad the attendance numbers.

I think a perfect example of how fucked the fandom is can be illustrated with this tweet chain from a few hours ago.

Dalmy is a fursuit builder who also recently started selling custom-made underwear specifically designed for fursuits, cashing in on a hot new trend. Today he tweeted out the following message encouraging people not to wear the fursuit underwear at cons until later at night.

I literally wrote the book on Fursuit underwear And I'm telling you that it's inappropriate in con space until later hours around 9 or 10

Some people agreed and seemed to understand why.

@SpotMyTots But in public spaces, it borders public indecency. It is lewd and discourages public interaction which is half the fun!

But others completely missed the point.

@SpotMyTots I disagree but, I wouldn't take some kids with me to a furry convention at all =P So..

And when someone else reminds them they have to share the hotel with others...

@FlyLikeAGShep true, but I don't think they care if the fursuiters are in underwear or not =x

Some people just don't seem to get it.

I don't know... there's a lot to be considered when comparing "old furry" to "new furry". I feel the fandom used to be more fetish-centric than it is now. The culture and demographics shift over the last few years with younger people flooding in have certainly mucked things up. There's a lot more attention paid to things like the fursuit dance competitions at conventions than the individual panels, which have also shifted (you're no longer going to find a room of fat sweaty middle-aged men talking about how hot Minerva Mink is.)

The tweets above are a good example of the problem: nobody wants to say anything in reality, but they'll happily jump on Twitter and complain about something they don't like. Which actually gave me an idea... Sports stadiums usually have some sort of service set up where people can anonymously text security to report unruly fans or other issues. Conventions really ought to adopt something like this, because it would make reporting smelly babyfurs so much more easier and convenient.

Hey guys.
For once I'm not on my phone because today I am sick and bored and at home...

So you FINALLY get to have a nice big dump of some of the furry stuff I have loled at over the last two years or so since I discovered the spergation that is the furry fandom.

I myself am not a furry, I just derive a sick pleasure from reading about their idiocies and watching their stupid videos, so let me share some of my favorites that have gotten me through a rainy day :heart-full:

This is one of my favorite furry videos of all time. Everything about it is so, so painful. He just got banned from Vine for being too sexual, by the way.

Your run of the mill fursuit parade. Good for drinking games.

The most terrible fursuiter I have seen thus far.

An incredibly shittily done furry eBay site that even sells "lightly used sex toys!"

More Dancing Duke, this video features a whole bunch of furs from some con. I love the group dance sequences and the fatties <3

Happy dance music, being furry doesn't suck, look how happy we are!

Dancing Duke twitter.

And finally, the grand finale, Squeak Latex.

Oh, my poor browsing history... :heart-empty:(:_(
