Personally, I think we can backdate the start of the descent into madness to George W Bush's re-election.It was a very slow burn that had been happening for ages, but my breaking point for where I was just done was sometime around '13-'14. Goons had all sorts of derangement syndromes long before Trump announced his candidacy, and every goon and their grandma trooned out.
lmao
One thing I found interesting was Slowbeef mentioning at one point that occasionally, he'd go into the Let's Play Dangan Ronpa thread, read the early pages of the thread, and get nostalgic for how the forums used to be.
For those not familiar with that thread, Dangan Ronpa was a stupid anime game for the PlayStation Portable, a game console that nobody outside of Japan cared about. Back in 2011 the game had not been translated from Japanese to any other language, but it was wildly popular in Japan. One Something Awful user, orenronen, decided to do a Let's Play of the game as part of his studies of Japanese and English, neither of which was his first language. He played through the game a bit at a time, presenting the game in the form of screenshots and videos and shit accompanied by his English translations of the dialogue. He did a pretty good job explaining what the Japanese dialogue had been and why he made the translation decisions he did (since the game's writing was full of obscure Japanese pop culture references that not even most weeaboos knew nor cared about). His Let's Play of the game quickly became very popular, and a lot of people on the SA forums found the game's story quite engaging even though it just was about a bunch of Japanese high schoolers killing each other in a Japanese high school like every other fucking Japanese anime that ever existed.
Tellingly, people on the SA forums were not the only ones who ended up following the thread. After all, it was the only possible place on the internet for a non-Japanese speaker to get the Dangan Ronpa experience. The thread became particularly popular on Tumblr, which was already a cesspool by then. What I remember hearing is that somewhere partway through Chapter 2 of the game, the thread's culture began to shift. New users kept appearing and acting weird and retarded, and the cancer soon spread to the rest of the forums -- even after the Let's Play had concluded and the game and its sequels had been fully translated and released stateside.
The Dangan Ronpa thread wasn't the only plane to hit the tower as far as I'm concerned (you had the bronies popping up everywhere before then as well), but goddamn did it fuck up the forums a lot.
This is pretty accurate. I can’t say for sure that the Dangan Rompa thread was the catalyst, but the timeframe matches. That thread brought in a shitload of Tumblr users, around 2008-2009, and then shortly after that was the general leftist disillusionment with Obama that radicalized a bunch of them. One thing I found interesting was Slowbeef mentioning at one point that occasionally, he'd go into the Let's Play Dangan Ronpa thread, read the early pages of the thread, and get nostalgic for how the forums used to be.

It's been brought up before but I agree with the people saying the paywall made more sense back in the early days of the internet because there were less communities out there that would have a way to keep children out. And of course back then, regardless of your opinion whether old SA was good, it wasn't resetera with a paywall yet.I would guess that the fee to join the website is the reason. Anyone vaguely normal would see that and say WTF, I'm not paying to sign up for some forum. So who does is weird people, the kind of people who become commies and troons.

SA was always fairly leftist, and forums like D&D had been moaning for years, but I’d say 2009-2010 was the start of when politics started pervading every forum, and by 2014 or so there was really nowhere you could escape.

All the libertarians you're thinking of were just people riding a trend. They're doing the same thing right now. SA was crafted by jannies to be a regressive hellhole. Anyone who wasn't willing to buy into it either left or buried their head in the sand until the troon brigade came for them.I'm more puzzled by the 05-09 regs who go to bat for the dick mutilation cause every time, but were probably libertarians when they regged.
It's like forty year olds hanging around college bars, leering creepily at the innocent young men.
Hiding their fleshy decrepit smellholes under ill-fitting dresses.
Goons transition from libertarians to socialists whenever they have to stop leeching off their parents and start leeching off the government. All the libertarians you're thinking of were just people riding a trend.
They never really cared about what Lowtax did, nor do they want to acknowledge that they aided and enabled him. They turned on him only when the problem became too big to ignore, and engaged in a performative gesture by removing a figurehead leader. The toxic culture that let Lowtax get away with so much for so long has not changed, and will never change.Burt Sexual keeps posting. Someone bought him a custom title with the dreaded Hard C-word.

Mods have started probating people for calling him out.

Yup, they were all responsible, so if they ban Burt now, where does it stop? They cannot admit the seriousness of his wrongdoing, because that would implicate them as well. There's no reason to protect Burt to such an extent. The only reason to do so is if they never actually had any problem with Burt's earlier shielding of Lowtax, because it's something the entire forum collectively engaged in and indulged ever since they collectively condemned Ashli for daring to go to a woman's shelter.
Right. The thing is, people with that sort of brainrot usually do not have a hundred thou at hand due to aforementioned JPG investing strategies. I find it much more likely Jeffrey is just fronting for Mr. Tax for a cut of the sweet, sweet reg money.People will spend thousands of bucks on pictures in a mobile game. In my opinion Jeffrey's purchase is the same type of brainrot but on a bigger scale.
I don't even care that he's not banned, Jeffrey's logic behind that was tenuous but not truly absurd. The real problem is that anyone who tells Burt to simply fuck off is being punished, and really demonstrates that it's not so much that they're tired of having to litigate Burt's account so much as genuinely emotionally invested in Burt as a person. It's allegedly a "new era" and the mods haven't learned that making topics taboo only encourages their discussion? Lowtax is a piece of the forum history, not anything that can get 'put behind'. Jeff is just creating a new context for 'mangosteen' bans.
As for Burt being allowed to walk among the living despite his clear collusion in bad-faith pro-Lowtax moderation, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a little bit of attitude in there that if KF thinks he ought to be canceled, well then dad gum it he goes free at SA.
