Bigot Brigade Something Awful and Friends - The roller-coaster train-wreck embarrassing downfall of a Web 1.0 giant and its tick offspring like from Cloverfield

It was a very slow burn that had been happening for ages, but my breaking point for where I was just done was sometime around '13-'14. Goons had all sorts of derangement syndromes long before Trump announced his candidacy, and every goon and their grandma trooned out.

lmao
Personally, I think we can backdate the start of the descent into madness to George W Bush's re-election.

One thing I found interesting was Slowbeef mentioning at one point that occasionally, he'd go into the Let's Play Dangan Ronpa thread, read the early pages of the thread, and get nostalgic for how the forums used to be.

For those not familiar with that thread, Dangan Ronpa was a stupid anime game for the PlayStation Portable, a game console that nobody outside of Japan cared about. Back in 2011 the game had not been translated from Japanese to any other language, but it was wildly popular in Japan. One Something Awful user, orenronen, decided to do a Let's Play of the game as part of his studies of Japanese and English, neither of which was his first language. He played through the game a bit at a time, presenting the game in the form of screenshots and videos and shit accompanied by his English translations of the dialogue. He did a pretty good job explaining what the Japanese dialogue had been and why he made the translation decisions he did (since the game's writing was full of obscure Japanese pop culture references that not even most weeaboos knew nor cared about). His Let's Play of the game quickly became very popular, and a lot of people on the SA forums found the game's story quite engaging even though it just was about a bunch of Japanese high schoolers killing each other in a Japanese high school like every other fucking Japanese anime that ever existed.

Tellingly, people on the SA forums were not the only ones who ended up following the thread. After all, it was the only possible place on the internet for a non-Japanese speaker to get the Dangan Ronpa experience. The thread became particularly popular on Tumblr, which was already a cesspool by then. What I remember hearing is that somewhere partway through Chapter 2 of the game, the thread's culture began to shift. New users kept appearing and acting weird and retarded, and the cancer soon spread to the rest of the forums -- even after the Let's Play had concluded and the game and its sequels had been fully translated and released stateside.

The Dangan Ronpa thread wasn't the only plane to hit the tower as far as I'm concerned (you had the bronies popping up everywhere before then as well), but goddamn did it fuck up the forums a lot.

Well, at least one good thing came out of that mess (ok, two)

This is pretty accurate. I can’t say for sure that the Dangan Rompa thread was the catalyst, but the timeframe matches. That thread brought in a shitload of Tumblr users, around 2008-2009, and then shortly after that was the general leftist disillusionment with Obama that radicalized a bunch of them.

SA was always fairly leftist, and forums like D&D had been moaning for years, but I’d say 2009-2010 was the start of when politics started pervading every forum, and by 2014 or so there was really nowhere you could escape.

I would guess that the fee to join the website is the reason. Anyone vaguely normal would see that and say WTF, I'm not paying to sign up for some forum. So who does is weird people, the kind of people who become commies and troons.
It's been brought up before but I agree with the people saying the paywall made more sense back in the early days of the internet because there were less communities out there that would have a way to keep children out. And of course back then, regardless of your opinion whether old SA was good, it wasn't resetera with a paywall yet.

One of the first premonitions of SA was to become was SpokkerJones' last frontpage article, which was just a animal rights screed about declawing of cats.

I can't remember being on SA after 2007, so I reckon it had started to suck after that.

I also think that Facebook may actually have siphoned off a a sizeable crowd from SA around that time, because in the early years of Facebook you could still go hog wild with fake accounts and shitposting.

The Dangan Rompa thread/Tumblr infusion was the point where everything truly became unsalvagable. It was the kudzu planted in the ground broken up by the cat lady mods. But it had started in the 2008 election.

The cat lady mods had already been shifting everything to the faggy since like 2005-6, but the 2008 was when they went HARD for Obama to the point of pretenses of political neutrality of mod staff went out the window because of right side of history. The McCain toxxing saw a lot of right wing not complete shitlib posters get banned and just decide not to come back.

On the back of that, their "replacements" were a bunch of tumblr snowflakes.

I'm more puzzled by the 05-09 regs who go to bat for the dick mutilation cause every time, but were probably libertarians when they regged.

It's like forty year olds hanging around college bars, leering creepily at the innocent young men.
Hiding their fleshy decrepit smellholes under ill-fitting dresses.

All the libertarians you're thinking of were just people riding a trend. They're doing the same thing right now. SA was crafted by jannies to be a regressive hellhole. Anyone who wasn't willing to buy into it either left or buried their head in the sand until the troon brigade came for them.

Burt Sexual keeps posting. Someone bought him a custom title with the dreaded Hard C-word.

Mods have started probating people for calling him out.

They never really cared about what Lowtax did, nor do they want to acknowledge that they aided and enabled him. They turned on him only when the problem became too big to ignore, and engaged in a performative gesture by removing a figurehead leader. The toxic culture that let Lowtax get away with so much for so long has not changed, and will never change.

There's no reason to protect Burt to such an extent. The only reason to do so is if they never actually had any problem with Burt's earlier shielding of Lowtax, because it's something the entire forum collectively engaged in and indulged ever since they collectively condemned Ashli for daring to go to a woman's shelter.

Jeffrey buying the forum from Rich was only ever done to appease the useful idiots, and as a means of avoiding responsibility for fostering a bad and broken culture that enabled him in the first place.

Yup, they were all responsible, so if they ban Burt now, where does it stop? They cannot admit the seriousness of his wrongdoing, because that would implicate them as well.

Forum hero Jeffrey in particular was always well aware how full of shit Lowtax was. He knew the forum doesn't cost that much to host and entirely pays for itself, yet allowed Lowtax to fleece goons with his sob stories. Instead of calling him out, he kept doing free maintenance work like a bitch and biding his time for a power grab.

People will spend thousands of bucks on pictures in a mobile game. In my opinion Jeffrey's purchase is the same type of brainrot but on a bigger scale.
Right. The thing is, people with that sort of brainrot usually do not have a hundred thou at hand due to aforementioned JPG investing strategies. I find it much more likely Jeffrey is just fronting for Mr. Tax for a cut of the sweet, sweet reg money.

I ll disagree there are clearly whales with money who are in too deep. Lowtax was getting a fuck ton of money. And Jeff selling lowtaxs scalp and working on the store show he wants some of that money.

Personally he should have declared an amenity reversed a bunch of bans and said from this date the rules apply but rap sheets don't factory in. This would provide cover to burt.

Of course the mods will still mod but it would be a great honey trap. Also bring back shark week once a year and then you have cover for purging.

It's allegedly a "new era" and the mods haven't learned that making topics taboo only encourages their discussion? Lowtax is a piece of the forum history, not anything that can get 'put behind'. Jeff is just creating a new context for 'mangosteen' bans.

As for Burt being allowed to walk among the living despite his clear collusion in bad-faith pro-Lowtax moderation, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a little bit of attitude in there that if KF thinks he ought to be canceled, well then dad gum it he goes free at SA.

I don't even care that he's not banned, Jeffrey's logic behind that was tenuous but not truly absurd. The real problem is that anyone who tells Burt to simply fuck off is being punished, and really demonstrates that it's not so much that they're tired of having to litigate Burt's account so much as genuinely emotionally invested in Burt as a person.

Keep in mind that goons have a serious tendency to stalk their forums enemies constantly for the sake of bullshit callouts all the time. At this point, it's normal, it's considered a basic right, and it's the default level of functioning that all these fat faggots operate on. And I see no reason why this suddenly somehow shouldn't apply to a guy who did the equivalent of hold the arms of Lowtax's ex behind her back so good old Rich could set up another haymaker. Burt should be mocked relentlessly for his defense of a wifebeater if he can't simply beg his buddies for a parachute account, and the admins should get the fuck over themselves and accept that Burt is not some beloved war veteran that must never be mocked for his years of loyal service.

JacobinPhoney believes that the right way to encourage racial minorities to support Joe Biden is to sic the Feds on them.

There have been some interesting poll results lately regarding black support for Donald Trump. If the trend continues -- especially if Trump wins re-election and a swing in the black vote winds up being a major factor -- I expect Something Awful forums discourse to fulfill the immortal words of Ambrose Bierce:

AFRICAN, n. A nigger that votes our way.
